While I've never understood why rival Hollywood Studios choose to simultaneously produce competing versions of essentially the same film - and I find it even stranger with art house titles like this - I have to say that I really don't envy Toby Jones right now. I mean, would YOU want to be playing Truman Capote on screen mere months after Philip Seymour Hoffman took home the Oscar for doing just that? And not only is McGrath's Infamous anohter film about Capote, it covers the same period of his life as did the previous film which makes Jones' life even more miserable.
However ... McGrath and company must have done something right because Infamous has just been announced as the opening title for the Venice Film Festival's Orizzonti Program, the secondary competitive program where they slot "cutting edge" films, though I suspect that their definition of cutting edge is somewhat different than my own.
Also in the cast of Infamous are Daniel Craig, Sandra Bullock, Gwyneth Paltrow, Sigourney Weaver, Jeff Daniels and Isabella Rossellini. Director McGrath also has some well deserved aclaim as the writer of Bullets Over Broadway AKA The Penultimate Truly Great Woody Allen Film.
