Right. This hasn't appeared at Darkdreams.org (my usual source for Argento news, the best Argento site there it), and it's floating around English and Japanese anime sites now.
Must admit, I spotted this in the AICN Anime News section, then noticed it had been drifting around for the past few days or so. Intrigued by this one, it's one of my favourite films, the classic often named directly by John Carpenter as inspiration for 'Halloween' and indirectly inspiring Horror as a genre in numerous ways as well as film in general. I've been watching anime on and off for close to twenty years or more - well, most off, but as you'll know if you visit regularly I can't avoid but keep looking for something substantial - and I've been watching Argento movies for about as long, so wonder what the mix could bring?
Another thing which has me thinking is that 'Deep Red' was sold as 'Suspiria 2' in Japan, though they're unconnected.
Here's the staff details for this newly-announced series (or movie?) based on 'Suspiria' : Director: Yoshimasa Hiraike ('Solty Rei'), Series Editor: Kazuho Hyodo, Screenplay: Kazuho Hyodo, Toshirou Ishidou, Original Character, Design: Nariko Enomoto, Character Design/Supervising Animation Director: Toshiharu Murata.
Fucking remakes!
Guess I'll have to watch anime again.
Curiously enough, this is just about the only way I can see a remake of Suspiria actually working. IF they retain the original Goblin soundtrack, that is.
Otherwise, it's poo city.
I guess here is where I say that I detest remakes and I'm not the world's biggest anime fan, but something about this idea just intrigues me.
Well, considering it's an anime remake by Gonzo, not much can be said about it until some script info/designs pop up I guess. This is the studio that remade Seven Samurai (Samurai 7) into some weird fantasy show with Mechas. So yeah :)
Also, any info on the format. I'd be nice to see it as a movie, but I don't think I'm interested in Susperia, the 26 episodes anime series.
I grew up reading 70s Japanese girly horror comics that were influenced by Suspiria, actually one of those girly horror manga magazine is called 'Suspiria'...it is fitting but that was the 70s. It is 2000s now and it is the medium of 'anime' (never liked them) and 'Gonzo' (not familar with them)...just errr...doesn't sound appealing to me. I could see how easily it ended up as some over stylized pretentious gothicky mess.
well, gonzo have a reputation - mixed - but theyre one of the biggy studios, so given this is a series of anime (drawn-out, cliched, convoluted etc) that aims more to give the impression its for a very broad audience (but only if youre older than 18 and not making much progress in what you watch - at least it seems that way, theyre nothing compared to live-action japanese movies in their content) but only usually find an audience thats obsessive/compulsive, and given that 'suspiria' has a lot of hard-to-define qualities and accidental successes within it, it could be a giant steaming heap or an absolutely fascinating project.
An animated remake is still a remake. Argento mentioned on the Tenebrae commentary track he did on the laser edition that a Hollywood producer wanted him to remake all his films as American ones, which he thought was stupid (it was and still is). A bloody anime based on Suspiria? It does fire the imagination a bit, but I hate remakes.
