[K-Film News & Box Office] June 13

(Posted In Asia Box Office Film News )

jjhnew.jpgAfter the disappointment (on both the commercial and critical fronts) of 데이지 (Daisy), many people are interested what Jeon Ji-Hyun will choose as her next project. There was a rumour she'd star in a Drama written by Lee Kyung-Hee of 미안하다 사랑한다 (I'm Sorry, I Love You), but the show is still in its early stages of development, so it's a little premature to talk about casting. But Jeon's management took the first step, as they commented the star of 엽기적인 그녀 (My Sassy Girl) will likely choose a 'small' film as her next project. Jung Hoon-Tak, president of Jeon's management iHQ said that Jeon is looking at several scripts right now, and her final choice might even go to an independent film. This is probably a sign Jeon has finally decided to abandon her 'Sassy Girl/CF Queen' image to become a serious actress, and seeing her in works more similar to 4인용 식탁 (The Uninvited) than 내 여자친구를 소개합니다 (Windstruck) will certainly help.

Jung continued that she received a good 30 scripts in the last year, with quite a few Multi-Million Dollar co-productions, but too many of them followed the My Sassy Girl formula, but Jeon wants to focus on works which will challenge her as an actress, and will start to focus a little more on the domestic market, unlike what happened in the last few years. He even talked about the possibility of a career in Hollywood for her, but it looks like Jeon would rather have a Korean film introduced there rather than starring in a Hollywood film herself, not only because of the language barrier and cultural differences, but also because the projects and scripts she receives have to be interesting enough to make such an important step in her career. So, in short, all good news. Will this new film mean for Jeon what 야수 (Running Wild) meant for Kwon Sang-Woo? One can only hope. [Naver News]

We recently talked about Park Joong-Hoon's new Hollywood film Bibimbap, but he's not alone: seems like Jung Joon-Ho of 투사부일체 (My Boss, My Teacher) will soon join Park and Kim Yoon-Jin as the next Korean star to act in an American film. A PR from Jung's management commented that, even though nothing is official yet, Jung received a contract offer from a Hollywood company last Month. Since language barrier is a non-issue for Jung, whose English is quite good, there's a strong possibility he'll accept this offer. Jung is currently shooting Jang Jin's 거룩한 계보 (Righteous Ties) with Jung Jae-Young, which is around 80% completed, and has already confirmed he'll star in the 3rd installment of the My Boss saga. [Yahoo Korea]

One of the most interesting new projects in Chungmuro is Park Jin-Pyo's 그놈의 목소리 (His Voice), which I wanted to write about for weeks, but I at least had to wait for casting to get started. Well, now we can start: Seol Kyung-Gu has been cast in the 너는 내운명 (You're My Sunshine) director's new project, as a news anchor covering a kidnapping case. This faction (fact+fiction) film is based on the 1991 Lee Hyung-Go kidnapping accident, and judging by the first interviews and reports, it sounds like a slightly more commercial version of 살인의 추억 (Memories of Murder). The important thing here is that Director Park, who before debuting as a film director with 죽어도 좋아 (Too Young To Die) was in the documentary field, was assistant director in a 1992 SBS Documentary about this accident, so he knows better than any director how it influenced the people involved. This shows once again the increasingly varied range of roles Seol is choosing: from prosecutor and detective in the 공공의 적 (Public Enemy) series to 3rd rate thug in the upcoming action noir 열혈남아 (Cruel Winter Blues) and Pro Wrestler in 역도산 (Rikidozan). The film will continue casting for another few weeks -- another big star is going to be cast as the kid's mother -- and will start shooting at the end of the month, for an Autumn release. Expect the usual little preview in a couple of weeks, when casting is completed. [Daum News]
