'Thru the Moebius Strip' trailer and more stills

(Posted In Action Animation Asia Sci-Fi / Fantasy Trailer Alert )

Moebius-Strip-CH-poster.jpgWe are a spoiled bunch here in the west. You cannot throw a rock in the air without hitting a computer animator on the head. We've been endulging on CGI films for years now. China has finally stepped up to the plate and while they certainly don't hit it out of the park you got to admire the fortitude and ambition of the first Chinese made full-length 3-D animation film, Thru the Moebius Strip.

Created from the imagination of French comic artist Jean Giraud [The Fifth Element, Alien, Blade Runner, Blueberry] this has been a long project and the more I see of this the more I appreciate the ambition. Putting style, advancement of the art [?] and its place in world animation aside those behind the project deserve kudos. This isn't Pixar or Square Enix but you have to appreciate the effort.

Through the SINA.com site you can find a link to the trailer that you won't have to use a pasword for [I felt dirty knowing that it was the same group that produces Uwe Boll movies] and plenty of design stills and conceptual pieces. I'll save you the trouble and link to everything below. I am that kind of guy...

When I think of places with a strong animation industry, China does not come to mind. There is hardy any from China, atleast to my knowledge. Lets hope this film would pave the way for more future projects in China. I'm all for it if it means getting to see original grown in China animation.

There's quite a lot of animation from China, but its just not well known in the west and no subbed disks are available.
A fair amount is available on DVD in Japan, namely the two disks featuring works from Shanghai Animation studios (which was actually established by the Japanese animator Tadahito Mochinaga):

But your best bet is to get hold of the 40th anniversary disk of UPROAR IN HEAVEN, which features a really beautiful 1965 version of the JOURNEY TO THE WEST tale, and a really interesting earlier version from the 40s. I got it for about $5 last year. (Sorry, I cant find the link to this anywhere)

But China has definitely got a really rich and beautiful animation heritage. I dont know much about it, but what I have seen I've been really entranced by.

Great, they've learned the wrong spelling for Through. Thanks, Yanks.

I agree also... I have viewed Shanghai animation studios work over the years. It's beautiful work, espeically its paper cut out pieces. However for me this film fails as a level of style. The renderings are poorly outdated and resemble as higher-grade "Reboot" episode. Perhaps the story will be enough to hold, but honestly for me Moebius' style and storytelling are one and the same. To demeen his visuals with such unpolished finishes is quite a shame. It could have been interesting if they had tried an approach like "Azur et Asmar" where the 3d design mimmicked the illustration rather than use the designs as just mere reference.

I look at Mobius's goregous concept art. I look at the stills from the end result. I think about how amazing this could have been in 2D animation. Look at the trailer for ASTERIX AND THE VIKINGS again: that was largely done by Chinese animators who could have theoretically been working on this project instead. It looks really good - unlike this. Makes me sad - this is a real waste of an opportunity. 3D rendered CGI is a tool. Sometimes it's the right tool for the job. Often it's not. It certainly isn't in this case.
