I’ve never been a Star Wars collector. As much as I loved the original films I guess I just missed the boat by a couple of years when it came to that sort of play. And make no mistake. Those were the days when you actually played with your toys. Anybody who kept them in the box was a dope. Of course by now they’d be a reasonably well off dope but they were never true believers. We know our memories are worth more than that. You couldn’t just walk down the street or cruise the Internet to find your hero or monster or machine in the pose of your choice. You had to take what you got and let your imagination do the rest. These days we get to have our figures and play with them too. The only question is which license holder gets our money.
Sideshow wins hands down in that department. Not only did they finally make a Star Wars Collector out of me they’ve also got me playing with the things. I’ve taken one of my twelve inch Sideshow figures out of the box!!! Everything about Jedi Luke Skywalker demanded it. It was as if he waved his little hand from behind the plastic and the next thing you now I was holding him, shaping his little cloak and making lightsaber sounds as I swung his arm around.
The packaging of the Order of the Jedi line (which includes ROTJ Jedi Luke, Anakin, young Obi-Wan and the tentacle headed Kit Fisto) is elegant to say the least. Rectangular foldout boxes (held closed by hidden mafgnets) reveal accessories, dolls and stands that can be removed without damage. In addition a veritable encyclopedia of info about Luke and the Jedi Order is printed on the inside flaps along with a list of accessories.
Did I say accessories? Ohmuhgoodnes. Besides his great ROTJ uniform and boots Luke has his brown hooded cloak, lightsaber hilt and lightsaber with ignited blade, and femur bone from his battle with the Rancor. You also have your choice of 4- count 'em 4- hands!! Will Luke hold his lightsaber drawn and at the ready, or spread his arm fingers spread to invoke some Jedi mind control? Or hold his lightsaber with a wounded hand? The ROTJ resemblance is dead-on including the slight disfigurement that was a result of Mark Hamill’s car accident before filming began. The only problem is that now I need a scale Rancor and one of those muppetty warthoggy guard thingies, and a scale pit to drop them in, and scale sliding spiked gate and a…. you get the idea. That’s why I love Sideshow. Their toys, dolls and polystones inspire.
My reviews of Sideshow are going to run shorter these days to allow for coverage of more pieces. Questions will tend to get covered in the comments section so if you got any shoot!
