WSFF Preview: Midnight Mania Freaky

(Posted In Animation Comedy Cult Random Festival News Sci-Fi / Fantasy )

wat.jpgThe 2006 edition of the Worldwide Short Film Festival is just around the corner and the good people there have passed along screeners of several of the programs so I can get an early peek at what’s in store. It’s difficult to ‘review’ these, per se, since shorts being what they are there’s not much you can say about many of them without diving deep into spoiler territory but I’ll do my best to give an early taste of my favorite bits and bobs … up first, the Midnight Mania: Freaky program.

WSFF runs two Mania programs, both of which are essential viewing. Creepy gets the horror flicks, the general weirdness goes here. This year’s Freaky program spreads fourteen shorts over roughly an hour and a half. Of the fourteen nine are animated, three are live action fiction and one is a live action documentary about an odd collision of extreme fighting, punk rock and freak shows in France. The entire program is very, very strong but here are my favorites:

Robota. One of the longer entries in the program Robota is a sci-fi picture set in some sort of Bladerunner inspired future city populated with robots involved in underground robotic cock fighting. It’s a stop motion animated piece with absolutely everything – the environments, the characters, the backgrounds – built and animated with LEGO. Very cool.

The Adventures of Big Jeff. Big Jeff, as the title suggests, is a big man. A big Australian man. A big Australian man stark naked but for his bush vest, Tilley hat and roller skates. He’s animated and anatomically correct. Big Jeff has decided to impart his wisdom to the children of the world and is using the letters of the alphabet to teach useful bits of information about the outback. It’s Sesame Street gone horribly wrong.

Full Metal Slacks. Two days after signing the order that expanded the conflict in Vietnam President Johnson made a phone call to order six new pairs of summer slacks with specific instructions that the crotch be hung low enough not to chafe his “bunghole”. This is the actual recording of that phone call animated with cutout figures of Johnson at his desk with American GI’s and Vietcong battling it out all around him. Political satire at its best. Declassification is fun!

Wat A Wonderful Day. A blend of stop motion and puppetry about a cutesy wutesy little stuffed bunny enjoying a sunny day while entertaining fantasies of violence. “I feel like GOD!”

Plenty more good stuff in there … the full program listing is here.
