After being the short end of the narrative stick from Christophe Gans and Roger Avery in Silent Hill, here is a nice piece of casting for incredibly underrated actor Sean Bean. We know, we know, there are too many remakes out there (and didn't they sort of already remake 1986's The Hitcher once already with JoyRide)? But how can you not love Sean Bean terrorizing some wide-eyed C. Thomas Howell type? Ok, I purely speculating here that they've changed genders this time around (admittedly this is guesswork from the producers announcing female casting first. Other folks have indicated that a couple may be stalked). There better be 'girl-ripping' because god knows that image/implication alone made this film a cult item. While Sean Bean doesn't have the pure psychotic face (it's those eyes) that Rutger Hauer used to good effect in the original, but damn if the man doesn't have practice playing slimey bad types. He has done at least a dozen of these since the first Brosnan Bond flick. At one time, the only draw for the remake of the Hitcher was to get a nice deluxe special edition DVD of the original, but now...hmmm.

agreed - bean is definitely one of the UKs truly great actors, as good if not better than clive owen, and also someone who has a tonne of TV work to his name, great dramas and so on... shame, both have actually suffered from an unfortunate 'housewives favourite' situation theyre not able to entirely get past - owen has done so to some extent, but he still kind of looks a little miscast in almost everything he has appeared in stateside. bean, however, was ideal for LOTR for example, but underused...
The best possible DVD of THE HITCHER is already available in the UK. It's a stacked 2-disc special edition. But yeah, maybe that will now be ported over for the US too.
No offense but well... RUTGER is well.... RUTGER. I mean you have to really ask WHY?????????????? No one and I mean no one can really top his performance(right down to him humming daisy on the prison bus.did you catch that in the original- I did....) Rutger lived that role, he became Ryder, I ask can bean do the same? I really don't think so...all three main characters made this movie what it was and no one, sorry to say, will ever match the fear and drama that to this day makes me want to never drive alone, at night, much less pick up a stranger- Thanks to Rutger I never will!!!!!!!!!
