The Pang Brothers are shooting a Hollywood remake of their own hit man film Bangkok Dangerous. Shooting is slated to begin in Bangkok this coming August - strange, if true considering how many other projects they supposedly have on the go right now - with Nicholas Cage in the lead role. Oh, and he's not mute any more.
Sigh.
Bangkok Dangerous is by far my favorite Pang film and I really wish they'd just leave it alone. Although Cage has talent he's wildly inconsistent these days and by casting someone that much older than the original character, making him a white man in Bangkok and removing the whole mute angle they've just completely blown up the concept of the original. Sigh.
Via WiseKwai.
why do directors remake their own films?
It's all about the cash, baby. No other reason for this at all ...
Presumably because they want to break into Hollywood? ;) At least in this case. I doubt films about rubbish, homicidal plant life and diaries given to premonition starring people the average Western Joe has never heard of are about to do it for them, so... Presumably if everyone's favourite Scientologist hadn't already picked up The Eye they'd be working on doing over that one instead.
Still depressing, though. I think I'll always have a soft spot for the Pangs as long as they keep making films, but they only confirm their status as two of the world's most interesting bad directors with stuff like this. Few people combine such artistic invention, such compelling emotion and such bloody-minded, incompetent clumsiness. :(
Word up, Eight Rooks. I just can't bring myself to get excited about any of their films anymore.
I thought Bangkok Dangerous was as cliched and melodramatic as any Hollywood film. This doesn't surprise me.
Yeh, it was quite clear this was the direction the Pang Bros were heading in.. but also being a fan of Bangkok Dangerous it still stings, regardless of them re-directing.
I dont know.. Haneke re-making Funny Games, and now this.. tsk.
