Well, it's official. The announcement Bey Logan hinted at in our recent interview with him has been made and this particualr cat is out of the bag.
The Weinstein Company has announced the launch of Dragon Dynasty, and "upscale" DVD label that will handle their large library of Asian action film titles. Yes, they will be leveraging Quentin Tarantino's name once again for marketing purposes but the real news is who will be running things behind the scenes. Along with Logan TWC has also hired Brian White away from Hong Kong Legends, which will hopefully be an indicator of the sort of quality that we'll be seeing from the label.
Look for release announcements soon for the Weinstein's library of Asian titles including Sha Po Lang, Tom Yum Goong, Ong Bak 2, and Born to Fight as well as the company's library of Shaw Brothers and Fortune Star titles.
But the real question is, who is going to be contributing the hip-hop soundtracks?!?
Awesome. I've been talking about this for a long time now, and I'm glad to see it officially announced. Bey said that these will be the original versions of the movies, and I have no reason to distrust him now.
Do the Weinsteins have the rights to Drunken Master II, Fist of Legend, and Pedicab Driver?
Aw crap! I would've been ecstatic if this was attached to anybody other than the Whale-stein Bros.
Dragon Dynasty: Asian film label or Asian film blackhole? Only time will tell.
Dragon Dynasty - I hear the pork fried rice is great there.
Not a word about any of them being uncut. Not a word about original music, language, sound effects or anything of the sort. Not a word about accurate (or any) subtitles. Not a word about them going back and getting the sound elements to the Shaw Brothers films that they didn't get the first go-round. These are the same guys who claimed to be listening to the fans when they released their crappy re-edit of SHAOLIN SOCCER with subtitles and expected anyone to be happy about it. I do not trust them. I would like to be optimistic, but experience teaches a different lesson.

The most telling sentence: "The company has ambitious plans to continue building the library,
and will be acquiring titles across all genres of Asian film such as
contemporary action, martial arts, epic swordplay and hi-octane thriller." Wow, not only did they get Tartan's distribution, they seem to have acquired all US rights to their narrow mentality as well. Well, it IS the Weinsteins.
And yes, apparently FIST OF LEGEND and TAI CHI MASTER are the launch titles, if I understand correctly. Not TWIN WARRIORS, mind you. TAI CHI MASTER. That's the most encouraging thing in the whole press release. Which means that appparently have most if not all of the Dimension HK releases. I'll be in my room eating crow.
and as soon as they start rolling the dvd's out, they will begin the usual strong-arm tactics against retailers like Yes Asia selling the legal R3 DVD's of films they have sat on for 5 years.
They are to genuine love of film what Bush is to good government.
glenn, sadly this is what all dvd companies do. I never order from yesasia so that particular issue isn't a real bother to me, but what I really despise is when they force the native dvd companies to remove English subs from their releases. See: Fearless, Tom Yum Goong, etc. I don't want to wait several months or years to see these releases finally hit r1.
