Website and Trailer For Jim Finn's Interkosmos

(Posted In Film News Musical Sci-Fi / Fantasy Trailer Alert USA and Canada )

jimdean.jpgBig thanks to Mike for steering me to the website of Interkosmos, the debut feature from Jim Finn. Finn has a number of experimental videos to his credit and for this, his first feature, he has put together one very strange sci-fi musical. With guinea pigs.

"The East Germans started in the 1970's, with their allies, on an ambitious, secret project to colonise the moons of Jupiter and Saturn. You didn't know that, did you? Finn reveals all: with beautiful archive material, swinging musical numbers in retro-socialist style, beautiful miniature sets, guinea pigs and a dramatic plot theory ..."

To create his odd little opus Finn has gone out and recreated a number of actual East German training videos and spliced this footage in with all sorts of odd quirks including - in the fashion of the early Hollywood musicals - a full on musical number every 8-12 minutes. Helping with the music are Jim Becker (Califone), Colleen Burke (We Ragazzi) and Jim White (Dirty Three).

Sounds promising with the musicians involved. However, it also reminds me of The American Astronaut, which I recommend heartily.

i can say it's absolutely nothing like American Astronaut. the music is a small part of the film. pretty much every shot is inventive. in the Q&A, Jim Finn described how he reshot his Super-8 shots by projecting them onto his wall and reshooting them in order to get a murkier look...it incorporates stop motion, romance, archival, found footage...really something totally new. i'd recommend it highly.
