Third or fourth specific release were asking for people to hit the company with emails about - 'cos we want the film to be released with English Subtitles and at the moment of posting such a thing as this it doesn't look like that's going to happen. This time it's Aoyama's recent 'Eli Eli Lema Sabachtani' featuring Tadanobu Asano.
Well, the Official Site is still up and that's always been in both English and Japanese versions, and again we know very many Asano movies have appeared in Japan with English Subtitles on. Fine, eventually this film is one of the most likely out of all we have covered to make a later appearance elsewhere, but we want the (almost) guarantee of a decent disc - so that's Japan then - and we want to avoid as much frustration as possible over getting our hands on it, and I feel safe in saying I am speaking for a lot of people on that one, as this film seems to have been highly anticipated and received since it was revealed.
Who do we hit this time? It's VAP - the company releasing Japanese Oscar hit 'Always' very soon with English Subtitles - and the product code you will need to reference is VPBT-12605.
The place to put together your email is hidden in the FAQ section of the menus, right at the bottom of that page, and it's the blue bit of linking text below their telephone number. The text fields, in order, are : Name, Surname (then postcode, first line of address) Email Address (needs repeating to confirm it - then it's the telephone number box), then a pull-down menu with topic / question type : select the bottom one with is general / miscellaneous enquiries, then there's the message box. It's worth the effort to try...
Remember, the keyword is 'English' 英語字幕 - as in Subtitles.
The title of the film in Japanese is エリ・エリ・レマ・サバクタニ.
Now, please visit the VAP Official Website.
I see a trand here. Could it be you want subtitles on every DVD release of films starring Tadanobu Asano?
nope. he happens to be of interest, he happens to be busy (always) and he happens to be in demand from top film directors in japan. the 'subtitle this' thing will continue, just coincidence that the first few and those of interest to me are 'umoregi', 'rampo noir' and 'eli eli...'.
This is one title I definetly want subtitles for and I'm definetly getting the R2J DVD as a blind buy - as long as it has subs that is..
English subtitles exist for this, as it's already plays during the film comment selects series in nyc earlier this year. And this isn't a Fearless type of film that is going to have a decent release over here after it plays in Asia, even with Asano. No reason not to sub it.
well, yes, subs will exist for this - and they do for a very large percentage of japanese films for festival showings and licensing purposes - but that doesnt mean the dvd is guaranteed in any way to have the subs on it... for numerous reasons, all of which we hopefully are all familiar with now. anyway, 'umoregi' and 'rampo noir' are asano projects of note apparently not coming out with subs on their japanese releases. 'tokyo zombie' too wont have subs in japan, and has been licensed by manga for america, and theyve said it wont make it out til late 07 - shocking. so, these 'subtitle this' things will continue - i am in charge of it, as it were, and the list is huge so i dont know what to do with that other than prioritise the major ones of interest weve covered on lots of posts.
Asano or not, it's Aoyama which means I waaaaaants it ...
This needs to be subtitled! Best movie I've seen in 2005!!
Please let this have ENG subs!
