Cronenberg's Next?

(Posted In Drama Film News Rumors USA and Canada )

Cronenberg.jpgYet another Cronenberg project on the go. This one, "Eastern Promises" is being written by the fellow who wrote Stephen Frear's mighty-fine "Dirty Pretty Things." Shooting is supposed to start in November. Naomi Watts (busy lady that she is, attaching herself to Michael Haneke's remake of Funny Games) and Viggo Mortensen are attached to star in the crime drama.

"In the film, a 14-year-old girl dies on Christmas while giving birth in a London hospital...A midwife whose search for the girl's family takes her to London's shady Russian crime community and to a Russian crime boss who is not what he seems."

Your guess is as good as mine as to whether this, "London Fields" or "Map to the Stars" will make it to the screen first.

An interview from mid-March had Cronenberg saying the London Fields adaptation was on the backburner for a while. Maps To The Stars and Eastern Promises were both announced in early February, and the latter is the only one we've heard about since, first with Mortensen's casting in late April and now with Watts joining as the lead. An educated guess would put Eastern Promises as his film to go forward, although a lot can happen in a few months.

With Focus Features producing this one (Eastern Promises) and US distribution locked down, yes, you are probably correct.

Which is great because out of the three it's the one I'm most interested in seeing.
