Brad Peyton is something of a burgeoning cult figure here in Canada. The creator of Evelyn: The Cutest Evil Dead Girl Peyton is a film maker, illustrator and animator of the sort that gets the Tim Burton set all worked up so word that he was working on a new animated series for the CBC was, shall we say, confusing. Our national public broadcaster, the CBC is not exactly known for fostering quirky talent - this is the network that passed on Trailer Park Boys - preferring to play it safe. And boring. Thus, other than hockey and Rick Mercer the big ol' network tends to have very little worth watching. But not to worry, boys and girls ... I've seen the first three episodes of Peyton's CBC series, What It's Like Being Alone, and his bizarre sensibilities have passed through fully intact ...
The thirteen part show is a stop motion animated series set in the Gurnsey Orphanage, a run down house in the middle of nowhere populated by bizarre, freakish children. Says Peyton of his creation, "I realized I¹d fractured myself into seven or eight personalities: every character has a little bit of me in them. I suppose this means one of my personalities is an ugly mutant girl who barfs up flying pigs. I do feel much better for this realization." The first trio of episodes involves crushed rabbits, home made robotic parents, a handful of suicide attempts and nods to Philip K Dick and The Evil Dead.
What It's Like Being Alone hits the air June 21st. Continue on for the first images.
