Den Brysomme Mannen (The Bothersome Man) Trailer

(Posted In Comedy Continental Europe and Russia Film News Sci-Fi / Fantasy Trailer Alert )

Den_brysomme_mannen.jpgOne of the best things about the Cannes lineup being announced is that all sorts of trailers for films being held for the big festival start to roll out. Today's example: Jen's Lien's Den Brysomme Mannen. A brutally dark comedy playing Cannes as part of Critic's Week this is one I've been following for a good while now for two reasons. Reason one: it's from the same production company responsible for the stunning UNO. Reason two: check out the synopsis.

"Forty-year-old Andreas arrives in a strange city with no memory of how he got there. He is presented with a job, an apartment - even a wife. But before long, Andreas notices that something is wrong. The people around him seem cut off from any real emotion, and communicate only in superficialities. The ominous ”Caretakers”, who make sure the city runs smoothly, keep an increasing watch over Andreas as they find he doesn’t fit in. Andreas makes an attempt to escape the city, but he discovers there’s no way out. Andreas meets Hugo, who has the same longings as himself. Hugo has found a crack in a wall in his cellar. Beautiful music streams out from the crack. Maybe it leads to ”the other side”? A new plan for escape is hatched."

I can't understand a word. And I want to see it. THAT'S what a trailer should do.

This year's Cannes line-up is historic for Norway, with four movies in the official selection. In addition to The Bothersome Man (which is really good and heavily inspired by the films of Roy Andersson, moodwise), there's also Uro ("Unrest"), Free Jimmy and the short film Sniffer. Free Jimmy is the closing pic of the Critics' Week, and also one of the beach cinema features.

Here's a quick translation of the trailer for the Norwegian-impaired:

A CITY WITHOUT PROBLEMS

WITHOUT MEMORIES

WITHOUT DEATH

WITHOUT PAIN

BUT THERE'S ALWAYS SOMEONE WHO HAS TO CAUSE TROUBLE

THE BOTHERSOME MAN

"There's something wrong with the liquer here. I've been drinking
all night, but it's not working."

"It's not working. I've drunk my entire salary, but I'm still just as clear-headed. And everything's like this. Nothing has any taste."

"You seem a bit uncomfortable."

"There's so much I miss, Håvard."

[Semaine de la Critique] Cannes 2006

"I've met someone else. I intend to leave you."

"Oh, but are you leaving before Saturday?"

"I can be here on Saturday, if you'd like."

"That would be nice."

"We'll get caught!"

"There is something!"

"Come on, Andreas, you can't do this. It's mine. You have no right to be here."

FROM THE DIRECTOR OF JONNY VANG

"Good luck."

"Thanks."

AND THE PRODUCER OF UNO

"We think we have a nice city. People are content."

THE BOTHERSOME MAN

"Nordby called. He wondered if we'd like go go-carting on Saturday."

"Go-cart?"

"Yes. Saturday."

IN THEATERS FROM MAY 26.

"Yeah. Sounds nice."

It's the best film I've ever seen!!! Scandinavian films are my favorite (Love Lars Von Trier films) But most of all norwegian films (I've also seen Hawaii Oslo which is good) You should put subtitle on the trailer though...
