왕의 남자 (The King and The Clown) DVD Up For Pre-Order

(Posted In Asia DVD News Drama )

clownondvd.jpgPR reps from Cinema Service talked to the press today, commenting that the DVD of the biggest Korean hit of all time, Lee Joon-Ik's 왕의 남자 (The King and The Clown), is currently under production. The DVD, which will release this July, will feature an International Version, adding a good 10 Minutes to the original film, mostly dealing with background scenes setting up the historical period and similar things. Director Lee and actors Gam Woo-Sung, Jung Ji-Young and more recorded a commentary, there'll be the usual assorted Making Ofs, and what's interesting, a mini-docu about the film's record at the box office, and a documentary about Royal Jesters, or as we mortals call 'em, those damn Clowns.

Now the shocker: there's going to be a Limited Edition heavy on merchandising, with the possibility of little dolls of the characters, the script, booklets with photos and the like, and the OST of the film (which is great). Also, the 'standard' edition (which should release at the same time) will be produced in three version. The big ass Limited Edition will sell for around 100,000 Won, which shows there's going to be some BIG added merchandise in there. Now you could say: 올드보이 (Oldboy) UE part 2. But no, this time Cinema Service tells us ahead of time there'll be a Limited Edition which will be pricy because of the extra content, and then the normal 2-disc edition (the three different versions should refer to different cover designs and nothing more). So while you die from envy for not being able to see 괴물 (The Host), here's your little consolation prize for this July. And long live the Clowns...

UPDATE - 5/17

Still have no details on the extras, but here's the first few specs. 'Standard' Edition of this 'Limited Edition' (Meaning, without the frills, dolls, and portable palaces... whatever they want to add) will be out on JUNE 23. Retails for 35,000 Won, so should be around 35 bucks at YesAsia and other stores. And the best part? FOUR DISCS baby (3DVD+OST I'm guessing, but it could mean 4+1). Four. English subs confirmed, more on all this in the coming weeks. But I just wanted to let you know you won't need to buy an inflatable doll of Lee Joon-Gi to get all the real goodies, which are the DVDs obviously.

UPDATE - 5/18

My apologies for bringing this up again, but more specs have been confirmed, and it'll be indeed 3 Discs plus Ost. Disc 1 has the Original Theatrical Version, Disc 2 the International Version, Disc 3 all the Extra Features and finally the OST. More on the extra features and merchandising including in the other version of this Limited Edition when package art is available.

UPDATE - 5/19

And here's your preorder [this is the Limited Edition without all the merchandising]. That was fast.

This is shaping up to be the costliest Summer ever!

yep, will be buying this - nice news.

Now if only they would do what would seem natural with the international versions -- subtitle the DVD extras.

Looks like this will be the first time I won't buy the LE upon release. $100 is way too expensive for me and I'm not a fan of doll/merch tie-ins with a movie.

The brutality of no subs on the extra material is what kills it for me..I'm guessing they'll produce maybe a couple of thousand max? We'll see how the funds are come July.

if they can sub the extras on a piece of turd like "Dueliest" they sure as hell better sub the extras on this one

I am really waiting to post good news.
I will buy it and enjoy it very much.
Thank you for good news.

ultimate edition - definite buy for me

» Posted by TiGrBaLm at May 17, 2006 06:19 PM

35 bucks sounds more like it, I reckon I could do without the merchandising end so this announced edition might be the one I spring for.

Cheers for the update X.

» Posted by logboy at May 20, 2006 03:07 AM

Great! Have been longing for DVDs of this movie;
but how and where to order the SUPER DUPER LIMITED EDITION please?

» Posted by SKM at May 20, 2006 03:00 PM

still hasn't surfaced anywhere (mostly because full specs haven't been announced). But when it pops up, we'll let you guys know.

» Posted by x at May 20, 2006 04:29 PM

i really want the super duper limited edition but i think it will be sold out fast in australia sydney because alot of koreans there coming. are u sure the super thingy is $100? i'll starve myself for alongtime to save money. if it over $100 arg! i will be anorexic, lol

» Posted by Jenny T/Chan at May 27, 2006 10:01 PM

Is it sure there will be a super duper limited edition?
Why hasn't it surfaced yet cos i want to preorder this edition.
And what if this super duper limited edition will not be released. Then i waited for nothing and the Special limited edition is sold out. argh.....don't think about it!!!!

» Posted by Catsumi at May 28, 2006 05:49 AM

are u serious!!?!?!?! its sold out!!! nooooooooooo!!!. im so pissed! waited for nuthin! catsumi have u checked yesasia?

» Posted by Jenny T/Chan at May 28, 2006 05:53 AM

Jeesus people, calm down. It's one month from release, and even the real specs (like a real list of the special features) hasn't been announced. When preorder for the big LE is announced, we'll post it here.

Frankly I have no interest in little dolls or other merchandising so I'll get the normal 4-disc ed, but if you want your dolls and stuff, you'll get them. As I said, the official announcement is three releases.

And of course it's not sold out.

» Posted by X at May 28, 2006 06:12 AM

i cant buy it online, sorri i was complaining. i have to tell my dad to get it for me in stores really early while im at school. Now there alot of koreans are now coming to australia sydney and its going to be hard to get it cause most live near all the asian imports. i hope they have plenty of copies esp the limited edition or the super edition of course.

» Posted by Jenny T/Chan at May 28, 2006 06:24 AM

Wow, it's great we can order on line, just wondering about the subtitles, are there only Korean and English subtitles? Please let me know

» Posted by Mimicat at May 29, 2006 01:33 AM

yeah, unless they add Japanese subs at the last moment, but I doubt it.

» Posted by X at May 29, 2006 03:31 AM

Mmmh, I just read on DVD Prime Art Service has no more plans to release the Super Duper Limited Edition after all.

So it's just the limited edition (3 Discs + 1) and Standard Edition (3 Discs). LE will be out first, SE will follow soon after.

There's been a little noise online about a few change of price (but it was just a problem with discount rates at certain sites and miscommunication) and I guess the response about the big thing wasn't that satisfying. I mean, 100k Won for a DVD Release...

» Posted by X at May 29, 2006 04:09 AM

no doll for me =( lol i must buy the limited edition then otherwise i will be jealous of others, lol jokes.

X what about the "my jun" stuff where it includes the doll, dvd, and the rest? i saw it from jun ki's fan website. it shows a picture of jun ki's trophy i think, its not a doll and his other stuff.

» Posted by Jenny T/Chan at May 29, 2006 04:19 AM

I don't know. Just saying what Art Service announced.

» Posted by X at May 29, 2006 04:24 AM

i heard from jun ki forums that is released already. and there's a link to download the movie. i wonder how they get it so fast.
