POSEIDON attempts to flood America this weekend, but Michael Guillen already boarded that ship, so what else in the world is there to see?
Screen Daily reports that gambling drama TWO FOR THE MONEY (a slumming Al Pacino and a grinning Matthew McConaughey) will be launched in Australia and SLITHER (much admired by Jim and Canfield but sadly ignored by the US moviegoing public at large) will snake its way into Mexico and Spain, while Japan will be able to experience Steve Martin in THE PINK PANTHER (which Jim didn't think was as bad as it could have been).
South Africa and other territories can discover that THE HILLS HAVE EYES (re-live, if you dare, Todd's spoiler-ific angry review and the contentious comments that followed) and the fine people of Brazil can decide if THE SHAGGY DOG is worth unleashing. (Sorry, no reviews on that one; Brazilians, you're on your own.) Meanwhile, Australians must weather the importation of THE BENCHWARMERS and residents of the UK can decide if they want to know WHEN A STRANGER CALLS (Jim suggests you don't answer).
Ah, what horrors Hollywood has wrought upon the world cinema community -- and my prose. Closer to (my) home, teen romantic comedy JUST MY LUCK (Lindsay Lohan) and family sports drama GOAL! THE DREAM BEGINS will join POSEIDON in trying to extract box office bucks at the multiplex.
Shane Meadows' DEAD MAN'S SHOES hits New York on a single screen (Todd's review makes me want to see this one). Other limited (arthouse) releases include RUSSIAN DOLLS (sequel to THE SPANISH APARTMENT, which I really enjoyed), Jeremy Piven in KEEPING UP WITH THE STEINS, doggy flick SAVING SHILOH, Sydney Pollack's doc SKETCHES OF FRANK GEHRY, and Richard Grant's WAH-WAH, while Terry Zwigoff's ART SCHOOL CONFIDENTIAL (probably my pick, despite mixed initial reviews) will expand to more than 700 screens.
Anything worth watching in your neck of the woods? Or will you catch up on DVDs or slightly staler cinema releases? Or (shudder) simply go forth and multiply in the fresh air and splendor of a spring (Northern Hemisphere)/fall (Southern Hemisphere) 48-hour pass from the work week?
i would recommend 'dead mans shoes' out of your curiosity alone, reasonably amateurish feel it has to it, but a great central performance (or two) and an interesting idea thats well told.
Well, us Belgians see Les Filles du Botaniste appearing in our theatres this week. Will go out and watch that one for sure.
As for recommendations, Dead Mans Shoes is a very nice, little film.
Los Angeles is getting Lady Vengeance and Three Times this weekend.
That's what I'll be doing.
what a disappointment art school confidential was. saw it last week in NYC- very boring- all the jokes are in the trailer. too bad
I'm supposed to interview Clowes today in conjunction with "Art School Confidential" opening in the Bay Area. I'll definitely get that interview up on the site ASAP. I'm not as down on the film as Kushitan, but, am cognizant that the film has extremely mixed reviews. I think Anthony Kaufmann is on to something when he suggests that, because it is spoofing critics, critics might not be too happy with this film.
