Korean メゾン ド ヒミコ (Maison De Himiko) DVD a Port of the R2J

(Posted In Asia DVD News Drama )

himikodvd.jpgSome good news coming from a recent MadMad update, as it seems like the Korean DVD of Inudo Isshin's メゾン ド ヒミコ (Maison De Himiko) will be a (much cheaper) port of the Japanese DVD. The biggest hint is that the only audio option is a LPCM 2.0.

But here's what we're getting: 16:9 Anamorphic Widescreen; English, Korean and Japanese subs (another major hint it's a port); all of this in 2 Discs. Widemedia is releasing this, out on May 19. On Disc 1 other than the film we get a Commentary with Director, DP and Producer (Korean subs) and various promotional material. Disc 2 features 167 Minutes of extras (Korean subs), including a making of, deleted scenes, interviews with Odagiri Jo and Shibasaki Ko and even a short film starring Odagiri. Exclusive to this release a featurette with the Korean VIP Screening.

Take a look at the set here. And, if you're interested, here's the preorder.

May or may not be a port.
I did a comparison with the new edition of Josee, the tiger and the fish, which I received some weeks ago, to some images of the R2J I managed to grab from another forum and it wasn't an exact port.
The image had been sharpened on the R2J - and I would say oversharpened as it exhibited a small degree of edge enhancement - if you were to apply a slight unsharp mask to the korean version, you would get a near identical image then.
Not an exact port but very close.

Anyway, this is a fairly good movie, not as good as the previous effort Josee.., but quite nice and unique in it's setting.

Fabool-- could you be a touch more explicit on what you enjoyed about Josee & why you feel Maison de Himiko falls short? Readers know how much I enjoyed Isshin's previous film (released as R3 K) and I can't seem to find very much information about this latest effort. Much appreciated!

I think Maison wasn't as enjoyable as Josee because it didn't have that small commercial flair that Josee did. Maison is a bit more serious and the romance part isn't as actively pursued by the leads as in Josee. The structure itself is pretty similar in both films and Maison is by no means bad.. just not as enjoyable as Josee was.
I think, Isshin might have left the commercialness to his other film, Touch, which was released the same year as Maison - although I haven't personally seen that one.
I also, untentionally, kept comparing Kou Shibasaki to her role in Orange days during the whole film. Probably due to the fact that Tsumabuki, who starred in Josee, was also in Orange days and had a strikingly similar role in both.

I believe Japantimes.com had a review of Maison if you want to look it up.

I see that they are now releasin Isao Yukisada's A Day on the planet. A flawed film but I still like it quite a bit, not as good as Joze or Maison but I feel it somehow complements them - probably the reason why the chose to release all three in a row. It also stars the two leads from Joze. A nice enough film to consider picking up if you like slice-of-life type of stuff.
