Oops. New 2-Disc HK DVD for 'Lady Vengeance' Has Unsubbed Extras!

(Posted In Action Asia DVD News Drama Random Geek Talk )

LADY VENGEANCE.jpgThey messed it up. Apparently there's no subtitles on the Extras after all - and yes, the packaging still states that it does indeed include English Subtitles on them. Make up your own mind what to do now, but people headed for this edition as, in theory, it beats the others hands-down. Imagine it's worth holding out to see what happens, as it may simply be corrected or repressed, but it has to be a fairly obvious cock-up to avoid, considering it's a selling point. Expect more on this to trickle out soon. No fade-to-grey verison either, though I had read that was always intended to be for Korea only.

Anyway, on the side but also in a related issue, I head Tartan mention recently that one of the things which causes specifications on extras to change is licensing : it's so complicated and often can't be sorted out in time as so many people are involved and they're working to close deadlines. Ironic, extras were and are a keep selling (and buying) point for DVDs and yet they're also something which then lets down a release so easily if you're not simply selling (or buying) the film.

Also interested in how this will effect the future of online downloads and purchases of films, in that it's clearly the direction we are going in and yet DVD companies don't even seem to be on top of this current crop of issues... if I am to download Japanese movies (for example) on a Pay To Own scheme, then I suspect more companies could be pursuaded to include English Subtitles - they're generally done for Festivals and Screeners, so why no put them on. Consider that the internet is a global thing, always has been.

It'd be worth a fuss if the film were any good. As it is, Lady Vengeance is more than a tad underwhelming. After seeing the film, I don't think I would care to watch the special features anyway.

What's going on with the announced trilogy Boxset ??? Any news ???

Are they going to fix the DD 5.1 issue that was plaguing the previous release. Supposedly, the DD 5.1 dropped out for half the movie...is that fixed on this version?

Yeah man, i want the damn Korean Trilogy Boxset.

Eh, I've just been waiting for Tartan's release anyhow. I'm sure that they'll have English subtitled extras included in the US and UK versions.

Though I'm more anxious to see A Bittersweet Life than Lady Vengeance. I think I should pick up a copy of Ji-woon Kim's The Quiet Family to tide me over until A Bittersweet Life gets a R1 release.

Don't quote me on this, but it looks like the boxset went into the backburner. Either that or it's taking longer than expected to produce it. It's still on some unofficial release lists (like DVDPrime's), but then again the Taegukgi Extended Cut has been there for ages when it's obvious we're not getting it.

Matt, as long as you don't open the DVD, you can get a refund, methinks.

i mentioned the extras licensing issue because tartan were specifically talking about how their announced specs for 'lady vengeance' had to shift, leaving them with less on their set than on the korean set, because of it all being so complicated and unworkable. the set - well, at the moment i will say what ive said before, and that is that the best edition of 'mr.vengeance' is the late 2005 USA issue from tartan : it looks somuch better than others in the comparison shots ive see, in my opinion. as for the other stuff : sound mix and booklet in the new HK set - dont know... just passing the word the release is botched at this point...

I agree with Chris, the film was a MAJOR disappointment, this coming from a big Chan Wook Park fan. I loved Oldboy, thought Sympathy was a masterpiece, and JSA is great as well. I haven't seen much other CWP stuff besides 3 Extremes, so I guess I need to get his older films and shorts sometime soon.

SFLV is a technical marvel but I simply didn't enjoy it. The lead actress is stunningly-beautiful, but honestly I didn't feel for any of the characters. Maybe I'll watch it again...it might take repeat viewings to really appreciate it.

You just know Tartan will hit out with a 2 discer in the near future. I rarely go out of my way to double dip for the sake of extras anyway.
