I grew up watching magicians on TV, I read about Houdini avidly and learned some fairly difficult sleight of hand. Ricky Jay is a constant source of interest. And I love the look on my own kids face when they watch David Blaine. If he seems schlocky maybe it's because being hip means wearing our cyncicism on our sleeve.

Where's the room for a little wonder here?

The problem with having a sense of wonder is that we know it's just a trick. If a person could actually make something disappear then it would be awesome but we know it's not possible. Thats not "hip" it's just being grown up.
