Y'know, it's been a long time since I actually looked forward to much of anything in summer blockbuster season but this year there are a few out there that I've got more than a passing twinge of interest in. Fer instance: the trailers for Superman Returns and Pirates of the Caribbean 2 both hit online in the past 24 hours and both look shockingly good. I have my misgivings about X3, bit MI:3, on the other hand, is getting glowing press and it's got a cast that just won't quit. Personally I feel obligated ot catch that one just to see how Simon Pegg fares in a big blockbuster.
Anyway ... trailers. The Pirates one turned up on some hideously slow site, so bad that I gave up after having downloaded only a quarter of the trailer in about an hour and a half. But luckily some more patient soul than I got the whole thing and posted it to Megaupload, so I shall steer you there.
Superman Returns Trailer (in a variety of Quicktime-y options)
Pirates 2 Trailer (Quicktime format)
The Superman Returns trailer has very, very, very nice production design. A neat, clean, hi-resolution look to it that has Bryan Singer's fingerprints all over it. However it also looks tame, predictable and ho-hum (not to mention, overly full of itself)...Time will tell if Supes is the yawner of the summer.
Make no mistake, the images are affecting, they just aren't very fresh, at the moment I don't believe there is anywhere to take Superman on the big screen...I'm reserving judgement until I see the film, but I'm not as excited about it as I want to be.
Anyone reminded of Kevin Spacey's turn as Dr Evil in Austin Powers??
They had better chant "Iä! Iä! Cthulhu fhtagn!" when they summon that Kraken.
I'm chanting that right now.
