Yo-Yo Girl Cop is based on the manga series Sukeban Deka by Shinji Wada. It stars Aya Matsuura as Saki Asamiya IV, a.k.a. Sukeban Deka IV. It co-stars Rika Ishikawa, Erika Miyoshi, Yui Okada, and Riki Takeuchi.

Here's a synopsis for Yo-Yo Girl Cop from Sanspo.com via Don Brown: "A police detective working undercover at private school Seisen Gakuen is blown to pieces on the streets of Shibuya. The cop had been investigating students frequenting a popular underground website named 'Enola Gay', where information on everything from bullying to bomb-making is exchanged. One week earlier, a strange counter on the website began ticking down to some unmentioned event.... Meanwhile, a young girl only known as 'K' is brought back to Japan from New York against her will, and is assigned the codename 'Asamiya Saki' by the National Police Agency. Her mission: infiltrate Seisen Gakuen...."

I hate that English title.

I agree "Yo-Yo Girl Cop" gives the impression that this movie is a teen comedy/spoof (unless that was the intension). Judging from the synopsis however, it sounds pretty gritty. I'm pleasantly surprised by the inclusion of Riki Takeuchi in the cast (I wonder if he's playing the part of Saki's handler or if he is the boss of the Sukeban Deka program, "Kurayami Shirei" AKA Dark Director). I'm also glad that they kept the look of the original Sukeban Deka TV series title graphic. Eagerly waiting for a glimpse of the trailer for this movie. Incidently, the cover art for Tokyo Shock's DVD releases for "Sukeban Deka: The Movie" and "Sukeban Deka: Counter Attack of the Kazama Sisters" are horrendously bad. What was Tokyo Shock thinking?

I meant to run the news of Takeuchi's casting on my blog but never got around to it. The news reports didn't say the name of his character, but did mention that he would be playing a detective who looks out for Saki Asamiya in a fatherly way, which sounds like the handler role that James referred to. 42-year-old Takeuchi divorced his 26-year-old wife in January, and looking at the cast of this movie it looks like he'll have plenty of opportunities to play Daddy off screen as well...
