Prohibited Importations Unit (PIU) of Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA): "Quarterly List of Admissible and Prohibited Titles" Q3 2004 - Q1 2006

(Posted In DVD News Random Geek Talk Trailer Alert USA and Canada )

gomorrahy.com.jpgTwitch, in association with GOMORRAHY.com, is now providing downloadable PDF files of the seven most recent issues of the "Quarterly List of Admissible and Prohibited Titles" of the Prohibited Importations Unit (PIU) of Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA). The issues collectively cover a 21-month period from July 1, 2004 to March 31st, 2006. Each one contains a list of titles reviewed by the PIU, which determined whether the material in question is "admissible" or "prohibited" - that is, whether or not the importation of the material into Canada is permitted - based on whether or not it deemed the material to be "obscenity or hate propaganda".

If you would like to receive free issues of the "Quarterly List of Admissible and Prohibited Titles" at the end of each quarter (i.e., four times a year), in PDF file format via e-mail, please contact the PIU at piu-uip@cbsa-asfc.gc.ca, by phone at (613) 954-7049 or (613) 954-7054, or by fax at (613) 957-4653.

For those who may be wondering what an article on material deemed by the PIU to be "obscenity or hate propaganda" has to do with the kind of movies normally discussed here on Twitch, it should be noted that on Friday September 10, 2004, CBSA arrested a man for importing into Canada a copy of Bo Arne Vibenius' Thriller - A Cruel Picture (Thriller - en grym film), and on Monday July 28, 2003, CBSA - then Canada Customs and Revenue Agency (CCRA) - arrested me for importing into Canada a copy of Catherine Breillat's Cannes-prizewinning Fat Girl (À ma sœur !). BTW, both of these movies currently are being sold on DVD at that cesspool of "obscenity or hate propaganda" known as the Twitch DVD Store.

Ridiculous... Arrested for ordering a film, ridiculous.

Not too proud of the motherland on that one.

funny thing is "fat girl" is available at amazon.ca

so why'd they arrest you? Infringing upon Amazon's exclusive license to distribute the movie?

6 years back, my boxset of "La Blue Girl" was seized and destroyed, it was deemed to "offensive" to enter Canada. LMFAO

Oh and another experience I had with them, I bought around $250Cdn worth of hairwax from Japan (yes japanese hairwax is bar none) and had it sent to my friend there who would then ship it over to me. Well we tried to have it sent over 2 times via EMS and both times it was sent back to Japan with no explanation, no reason given. The box was never opened either. Well then I didnt know what to do, $250 worth of merchandise sitting around and no way into Canada, but I got lucky since another friend of mine had gone back to visit in Japan for a month and I had the stuff sent back with her, and lo and behold she wasnt even stopped or anything, totally baffles the mind!!

That is why I HATE the CCRA and its moronic staff with a burning passion and am enthralled whenever something gets past those imbeciles without being seized or tax raped.

at least theres a list of restricted material for canada. for the UK, the laws are such a grey are that it seems possible to seize anything not displaying a BBFC certificate - thats potentially anything entering the UK. in truth, theres unlikely to be a crackdown on imports of disney films, but theres still restricted acts that cannot be portrayed : and even they sometimes can be seen within films and yet be the cause behind a seizure. odd isnt it? its even possible to prosecute anyone selling something that doesnt have a certificate on it : £30k fine seems likely and is often talked about as the bare minimum for what can be an unlimited fine. infact its so grey even all this is debateable to a large extent. what upsets me more than anything, other than it being so grey and exploitable, destructive towards peoples lives and freedom, is that the existence of the BBFC is so limiting to the material that could easily find an audience in the UK, because theres always the potential for a film to be denied a license... were not that adventurous in the UK as a result, it often seems...
