When they moved from Wonju in Kangwon Province to the big capital in 1989, the Eom's were just a poor family like many others trying to find new opportunities in the post-Olympic Games Seoul of the late 80s. Even entering a MBC Talent contest that year didn't work much for big sister Eom Jung-Hwa, until she signed with the manager who made Choi Jin-Shil a star (Bae Byung-Soo) in 1992, which opened her the door of Chungmuro. The rest of her acting (and singing) career, and even what happened to her little brother -- Eom Tae-Woong of 부활 (Rebirth) -- is history. But even if years are passing for Eom too, she still feels like an exciting new talent to me. Great vitality, megatons of sex appeal, and acting range that's quite surprising for someone used to mostly TV Dramas and half a dozen films.
Her latest effort -- one of many films she'll appear in the next year or so -- 호로비츠를 위하여 (For Horowitz) might just walk a minefield: music teacher, kids, melodrama. Ouch... feel the tension? It could all explode into a mess, but then again the last time we were served with this kind of setup, the final result was 꽃피는 봄이 오면 (Springtime). Eom and Park Yong-Woo might not be Choi Min-Shik and Kim Ho-Jung, but it still has potential -- and besides that, the great Lee Byung-Woo is taking care of the soundtrack. After 오로라 공주 (Princess Aurora), another chance for Eom to flesh her acting muscles, and perhaps a potential mid-sized box office hit. I don't know, the cast is there, it's a debut director... could be just a star vehicle, but Eom Jung-Hwa will get my attention anyway. Film releases on May 25. Take a look:
