TF1 Releasing Wong Kar Wai's Ashes Of Time On French DVD!

(Posted In Asia DVD News Drama Martial Arts )

ashesdvd.jpgAshes of Time is the one Wong Kar Wai film that I do not own and the reason why is very simple: every DVD version of it that currently exists, every single one, is absolutely wretched. That is about to change.

DVD Active have gotten word - and a cover to back it up - that French company TF1 will be releasing a new edition of the film on May 4th. Now, there were rumors bubbling a good while back that WKW was prepping a new cut and transfer of the film for release and the timing makes me think that this could be it, though I have nothing to back that up other than a hunch. Either way, TF1 doesn't release crap so you can bet that this will be by far the best release this has had to date.

Thanks to Jungwhan for the pointer. And can I say how happy it makes me to have posted this back to back with a Troma article?

Does TF1 ever release stuff with english subtitles though? I've been under the imporession that they are strictly for french speakers.

ronin--i have that crappy mei ah version, and i've been waiting to replace it for a good long while. stay far away! and josh--TF1 released a fantastic edition of "in the mood for love," english subs included. let us hope that means "ashes of time" will also be english friendly...

It does not look promising on the English subtitles front, tragically.

Rhythm-X, is your alias taken from one of Kool Keith's many alter egos? If so - well done!

(Bummer about the Ashes of Time subs, but hopefully if there's a remastered version it's only a matter of time until someone else picks it up. Now...if only someone would remaster Johnnie To's "The Mission"...)

It ll be also released in french proper dvd in may (23th), same thing for The Three Outlaw Samurais and some others Hideo Gosha's movies.

Well, i just don't thing there ll be english subs (maybe french forced subs...)

shura-Where'd you hear about The Blade getting a French release?

» Posted by Tory at March 28, 2006 08:00 AM

where ?
In the Streetfighter's box (released few weeks ago), there's a teaser, you could see Ding On, he's training hard to master the broken heavy sword, and after you got "MAI 2006".
For further details, check http://www.asia-diffusion.com/new/dvd.php?id_dvd=2426
(it said available on 06/23/2006)

We are waiting for this dvd for more than 4/5 years !
hope it helps ;)

Thanks a lot man. You just made my day.

» Posted by Tory at March 28, 2006 02:14 PM

But, there's no subs. :(

» Posted by Tory at March 28, 2006 02:15 PM

I heard last year from someone in the know that there would be no further releases of the original (non-recut) Ashes of Time, so we can probably assume this is the remastered "director's cut" version. That said I doubt there will be English subs simply because TF1's recent release of As Tears Go By lacked them as well.

Yep, no english subs for HK vidéo's release, maybe even french forced subs.

About Ashes of Time, it seems it's the cut choosen by WKW himself (for the occidental market). But i don't know more.

X'll get wreck wreck, breakin your neck neck.
Your brain is the seed, like a bird I go peck peck.

To not be COMPLETELY off topic, does anyone have any idea how different the new cut of this (which I assume this is) was supposed to be from the one(s) we're familiar with?

» Posted by Rhythm-X at March 28, 2006 09:29 PM

Apparently it won't be a new cut after all. Sorry if I got anyone excited for nothing.

» Posted by Bob Violence at March 31, 2006 06:51 PM

Any review of it so far?
