Have I mentioned recently that Hungary is one of the hot spots for world film right now? Because it is. Nimrod Antall (Kontroll) and Aron Gauder (The District) have both made waves on these shores recently and you can expect to be hearing from first time director Roland Vranik a fair bit in the next little while. His film Fekete Kefe won pretty much all the awards that Gyorgy Palfi's Taxidermia did not at the recent Hungarian Film Week and it's not hard to see why. Here's the synopsis from the NAT Film Festival Website:
"Formed in the mold of Jarmusch, P.T. Anderson and Linklater, Roland Vranik's auspicious debut, Black Brush, winner of best film and cinematography at the Hungarian Film Week, takes slackerdom where it's never been before: Budapest. The film slowly transpires over the course of one rather eventful "working" day for four young, inept stoners, who are wasting the summer away as, yes, chimney sweeps. After losing their boss's money in a cockfight, they win the lottery, only to have the ticket eaten by a drug dealer's hash-mule goat. From there, things just get weirder and weirder. A former assistant to Béla Tarr, Vranik has absorbed his master's hypnotic, dreamy feel, while a creaky score and superb widescreen, black-and-white photography takes the material to an entirely unexpected level. A true delight, Black Brush has cult hit written all over it."
Every film should include a goat, I say.
You'll find the teaser linked on the official site. It's in the 'Letoltes' section, third from the bottom.
Oh man, so great to once more hear those booming soundtrack beats (made by Krisztián Vranik, the director's brother) on the website. I saw this film at the International Filmfestival Rotterdam and liked it quite a bit.
great beats, great web design, great goat...
