We've actually had links to this film tucked away here and there a few times on the site now but I completely missed out on the fact that Memories of Matsuko is the latest from the director of Kamikaze Girls, as fun a piece of luridly colored fluff as I've come across for some time. With Wisit Sasanatieng constantly being labelled Thailand's answer to Jean-Pierre Jeunet it seems only fair to suggest that Tetsuya Nakashima be considered Japan's answer to the same. This one looks to be slightly more restrained than Kamikaze Girls, but restraint is such a relative term, isn't it? It's unmistakably the same guy and this has just jumped way up on my list of films to look out for ...

I wasn't that impressed with Shimotsuma monogatari but it did have an interesting visual flair to it and if this film adds a bit more substance, be it totally wacky or not, then this might just be a winner. Certainly looks interesting, I have to give it that.
I dare them to put english subs on the DVD...
Sola Aoi is in this movie; on the official website for it, she's the ninth credited cast member.
There's an English language page for Memories of MATSUKO at TBS.
Here's a synopsis for Memories of MATSUKO taken from that page:
When a bored college student learns that a long lost aunt has been found dead in a park, he begins piecing together her life to see if it had any value. What he finds is a revelation. Talented film director, Tetsuya Nakashima ("Kamikaze Girls" 2004), wield a host of cinematic tools to make "Memories of MATSUKO" a memorably entertaining and emotionally powerful "fairytale tragedy," weaving together realistic human drama with offbeat comedy and spectacular (Bob Fosse-like) production numbers to tell the heartbreaking story of Matsuko Kawajiri, a starry-eyed woman who spends her entire life serching for a worthy "prince" capable of returning her limitless love. Versatile actress, Miki Nakatani, renders a virtuosic performance in the lead role of Matsuko.
It looks like the English TBS page will have English info on The Sinking of Japan, Kisarazu Cat's Eye - Sayonara Game, and The Curse of Nobuhiro-san soon too.
