Okay, this one's for those of you criticizing the Miike retrospective we linked to yesterday for focusing mostly on films already widely available on DVD ...
Florence, Italy is hosting a Korean Film Festival through the end of March and beginning of April. While it's got all the usual suspects there - The President's Last Bang, A Bittersweet Life, Park's Vengeance trilogy, etc - check out what else they've dug up: Chan Wook Park's seldom seen short Judgement, and his even more uncommon features The Moon in the Sun's Dream (1992) and Threesome (1997). And there's more! Evidently the programmers are rather fond of Song Il-Gon - good taste, those programmers - and not only have Spider Forest, Git and Flower Island but also the feature version of Magician(s) and his rare shorts Dream of the Clown (1996), Liver and Potato (1998), Picnic (1999) and Flush (2000).
Right about now it hurts not to be in Italy.
Check out the festival website here.
Maybe I'm being a bit too presumptuous or optimistic here, but the fact that Park's pre-JSA films are beginning to appear in international film festivals could mean they're destined for an eventual DVD release. Now that would be a treat!
...but if you're italian, it doesn't hurt at all! I'll be there, of course, at least for The Moon is the Sun's Dream and Threesome.
I'd also like to point out that Kim Jee-woon and Song Il-gon will attend some of the screenings of their movies.
It might also be useful to inform that, right after the end of the festival in Florence, some of the movies will also be screened in Turin (Park Chan-wook's, Kim Jee-woon's and Song Il-gon's movies) and in Milan (Park's movies only).
If they put out the old park and song shorts on DVD and I wouldnt care if this festival was held on Mars...otherwise it really does hurt
Thanks for the heads up. I won't be able to make it, but at least my dreams will have some new material for a few nights.
Ha!!! why am i not in italy for this festival !!! Just for Song Il-Gon short movie and the long feature of Magicians... The short movie was outstanding and I'd really wish too see the long one. For those who get to see it at Florence, feel free to talk about it once here please :)
Wow. To think you can do a Korean-only film fest these days, and it's all gooood! Wish I was in Florence too...
Oh dear, Park Chan-Wook... the most overestimated director of last ten years...
