Stand Alone Complex : Solid State Society.

(Posted In Action Animation Asia Cult Drama Random Geek Talk Rumors Sci-Fi / Fantasy TV )

3rdgig.jpegThere was a recent announcement of further work to be produced under the banner 'Stand Alone Complex' for the 'Ghost in the Shell' franchise, thanks to I.G and Bandai. Now we know that there's a trailer for the project, whatever it may be exactly, due to be shown at the Tokyo Anime Fair - held between March 23rd and 26th 2006 - and then the whole thing should be clear. For now, speculate away as to this being either the desired '3rd Gig' (third series of the show, the first being made 2001 and 2004 respectively) or a movie.

Either way, there's still ground to be had from the imagination of the team behind the show, I suspect Oshii is tired of it or just wants to do something different, and I would also suspect there's a desire to explore the ground that's in the style of the show much more as it's potentially more worthwhile financially and from a longevity perspective. There's a kudos element to the films, but the TV does really well and has been a huge seller on DVD. Plus, the series has a much more palatable story-based style, with individual episodes and running issues, themes and more - each 30-minute episode is packed with ideas, great originality and substantial quality in every department - possibly the anime which has fulfilled my long-held hopes for what could lie out there in that field. Anyway, still picking my way through the current run of R1 DVDs for '2nd Gig' (Volume 4 now) and still going to go back and watch the '1st Gig' soon. For now, there are only brief mentions of the work on Japanese sites, so any further info out there is pretty well hidden, but all will be revealed soon [Source : Anime News Network].

Jesus christ, Bandai... stop milking the damn franchise, already.

That's nice but when will the first two seasons get watchable DVD releases?

Solid State Society is confirmed to be a movie according to Bandai Visuals Japanese site.

Great news. This is a franchise I welcome to be milked: 1st GiG was better than the movie, and 2nd GiG was better than the 1st. If this trend keeps on occurring, I've got no qualms.

The 'first gig' of Stand Alone Complex was one of the worst anime series I have ever had the misfortune to see.
It was just like an average American cop show with some cyber-techno-bollocks grafted onto it.
All the intelligence and philosophy of the movie was replaced with redundant 'action' and pervy shots of the Major's ass.
I've been told the series is closr to the manga by Shirow but if thats the case then I'm very happy I've never read it.
Appleseed (2004) was just as bad. A visually sumptous but hollow and empty experiance.
My local anime society showed 2 eps a week along with other shows and that is the only reason I watched all of it.
If I'd been watching it on my own I'd have given up at around ep 8.

I suppose this is a horses for courses thing. If you want the philosophy go with the films, if you want the cop show+Major's ass go with the TV series. I like both myself. The whole point of Gits seems to me to be an elaboration of the original Shirow cheese cake art. If you start with a perfect body and then put a character in that body how would that person feel? Would they feel their image as a separate thing from themselves? Would they end up alienated from their body?
The TV show doesn't seem to explore those themes but the Major-Batou-Togusa character formation is a very flexible setup that can work in a number of narative situations.

Wow, someone actually wishes this to be milked? Doesn't sound like you've been a fan of Ghost in the Shell for long. Personally, I think first manga, movie, and first gig were enough.

Gabriel, it took me a while to give the TV series a try since I was a big fan of the film, but eventually it turned out to be a good decision because it felt 1st GiG had considerably more layers to peel off than the film (which, unfortunately, had its layers quickly diminish after a few viewings). But here's the trick: 2nd GiG was surprising, because I thought that was IT. The ending of 1st GiG was such that you didn't expect a sequel, but now that it's happened, it feels a bit incomplete without another season in my opinion. You don't come back from "death" for just one damn season, you have to finish that arc. I'd like to feel that sense of completion.

Hey, Voom, can you provide a link to where on the Bandai Visual website it says SSS is going to be a movie? I tried looking around on their site and didn't come up with any mention of the new project.

Never mind. The Japanese link that says it's going to be a movie is here: http://www.bandaivisual.co.jp/flash/

To denigrate Stand Alone Complex as merely a cop show is utterly missing the point. Where as the films are primarily philosophical commentaries, Stand Alone Complex is more of a deeply layered sociopolitcal commentary based on the postulated technologies.

It's not a milk of the franchise. It's a story. If you new anything, you'd know that S.A.C comes before the movies. Solid State is what happens between 2nd gig and the origanal Gits.

» Posted by xoki at July 28, 2006 05:15 PM

not true xoki, the original movies 1 and 2 are in different universe from the tv series.. so what ever happens in those movie timelines stays there and what ever happens in the tv series timeline stays there, the new movie Solid State Society takes place in the tv series timeline just after 2 years after 2nd gig ends.all in all gits s.a.c doesn't come before the movies. so what ever happens in the new movie will stay in the tv series timeline, assuming if there's going to be another season ghost in the shell tv series after the Solid State Society is finished.

I agree with oz, there's more to gits than being a cop show. Blackzarak's comment is dumbfounded and typically applies to people that can't apply thinking and watching a great anime at the same time. Gits is a very good series if you have the brain to think about what they are really talking about. Though for me the TV season 1 is the greatest, tied the 1st movie and 2nd tv season in 2nd place and i'm still deciding if the 2nd movie really deserves a place.
