Some more news out of Studio Ghibli today courtesy of Peter over at GhibliWorld ...
First, the studio has announced that Kazuo Oga's Taneyamagahara no Yoru will be released on DVD July 7th to mark the 110th anniversary of Kenji Miyazawa, the author who's work the film is based on. Still no stills or firm word on the visual style but you can gather some interesting information from the DVD specs. The film clocks in at twenty seven minutes and includes only one actor in the voice cast, augmented by a choral ensemble. This has got me thinking narration and singing over images. Sadly, no english subtitles on this one.
However ... being released in Japan at the same time as Taneyamagahara, and getting an english subbed two disc special edition no less, is Isao Takahata's Gauche The Cellist. This is a 1982 film from the Ghibli co-founder, also based on the writings of Kenji Miyazawa. This one appears to be out of print world wide so a new, English friendly release is a welcome event for Ghibli fans ...
Actually, on occasion, the "The Cellist" can be found as "Goshu:The Cellist". I'm not sure that it's a bootleg (probably is) but the copy I recieved is pretty decent quality. However, with this news, I will no longer be the envy of my anime friends. Nevertheless, this is good news.

This Goshu is actually a legal one but can still be found here and there. I am sure the Ghibli version will have a higher quality transfer etc than this one though which I thought was kind of crude in the transfer dept.
i am sure there was a japanese disc of gauche the cellist with english subs (though that elements debateable) at some point early on in the life of DVD - anyway, yes i will be plumping down the cash for that one... probably get the other short movie too...
My copy has a similar cover and claims to be an authorized copy. It’s done by a company called Manga Animation Cartoon DVD. It also says on the disc that it is only authorized for distribution in the Asian market and lists the countries. But none of that necessarily exempts it from being a bootleg.
The transfer is actually not that bad at all but the source seems to have a touch wear at the beginning (credits) but this becomes less of an issue as the film progresses. Whoever did this seems to have avoided many of the issues that usually hinder an animation transfer. The colors are pretty nice too. If this is legit, could it be from an Asian company that specializes in budget releases for the Asian market? 99% of the writing on the cover (F&B) is Japanese, the title in English does appear once and that is in the lower right hand corner and it’s kind of small. Japanese is the only language offered on the disc. The subs come in both English and Japanese. There is also very little, if any, misspelling of words or improper grammar in the subs. It’s also full screen.
Most boots are usually Chinese, Malaysian or such but this could be a Japanese boot.
BTW- Does anyone know what the aspect ratio for the new one is supposed to be?? It was killer to have Totoro in widescreen.
Manga Anime Cartoon is one of the biggest anime bootleggers there is. None of their stuff is legit.
More news: on my website the cover designs of both of the two new Ghibli DVD’s and also the links to pages where they happen to be up for pre-order now at Amazon.co.jp. (also, the third of six dedicated specials to the Ghibli Museum Shorts). Anyway, more info over here:
