The Great Yokai War. by Takashi Miike (2005). Here's your R3 HK DVD...

(Posted In Action Asia Comedy DVD News Drama Random Geek Talk Sci-Fi / Fantasy Trailer Alert )

R3HKYOKAI.JPEGEye Candy once again, just to give another example of how damn nice HK (or anyone) can turn out a DVD if they put their minds to it, and HK is getting better at their DVD issues right now. Just look at that lovely array of colors and thoughtful design, yum! Mine's in the post now, slightly earlier than was expected (actually shipped on day of release) and will not be here until early next week (haven't had to wait that long for a new Miike this time) so kind of excited this weekend, which doesn't happen that often.

Hope all the extras are subbed, here's the full specifications : Disc 1 - Film (Letterboxed and 16x9 enhanced), Japanese (DTS 5.1), Cantonese (DTS 5.1), Chinese (Traditional), English, and Chinese (Simplified) subtitles. Region 3, DVD-9. Disc 2 - Extras, Another Story of Kawataro (Yokai), 2005 Yokai Conference, Short Drama of Yokai, Making of Yokai Movie, Interview with Main Cast, Visual Records of Promotion, Documentary of Ryunosuke Kamiki (Lead Actor), The Introduction of Yokai (Picture Only). The regular edition, the 1-Disc version of the package, contains the same first disc at the 2-Disc set. Looks nice. [Source : AsianDVDGuide].

I would like it if it wasnt for all of the yellow writing at the top of the cover.

Ugh, that cover is UGLY because it is waaaaay too busy. I do like the wooden box with inside small panels on the individual Yokai though.

Colorful package, but designers need to go back to art school.

I got my copy today - I got the two disc set - and I really like it. Lettering is all in silver and white, which looks much better than the image up above and I really like all the characters on the cover ... almost makes me wonder if they used those old Star Wars posters as a starting point for the design. The set comes in a very heavy gauge slip case - very, very nice - and slides out to reveal a fold out gatefold, also really heavy duty, in a mock-wood finish. Contents of the discs are fantastic too ... absolutely everything is subtitled and there are hours of fun material on the second disc, including stacks of interview footage, a couple goofy yokai short films, press conferences, and a huge encyclopedia of all the yokai characters. Video quality on the film is excellent, too. A little bummed there's no commentary (why does Miike do so few?) but Media Blasters are absolute idiots if they do anything other than just port this entire release over - packing included - for their R1 release ...
