Canadian produced Fido is a film that I've been keeping an eye on for a little while now and now that there's a poster out it seems as good a time as any to bring it up ... The zombie comedy is set in an alternate 1950's in which the world has been over run by zombies. But wait! Those clever scientists have come up with a zombie restrain collar that allows the beasts to be domesticated and used for household chores or even to be kept as pets! The concept is fantastic and with Carrie-Anne Moss, Henry Czerny, Billy Connolly and Tim Blake Nelson in it there's a fighting chance people might actually go see it. Lion's Gate has picked it up internationally, TVA has it here in Canada and word is that they're hoping to premiere it at a certain very large local film festival which means we're looking at a fall release date.
Read on for the detailed synopsis.
Welcome to Willard, a small town lost in the idyllic world of the 50's, where the sun shines every day, everybody knows their neighbour, and rotting zombies carry the mail.
Years ago, the earth passed through a cloud of space dust, causing the dead to rise with an insatiable hunger for human flesh. Terror spread across the land, until a collar was invented that made the zombies docile, even useful. A company was born: ZomCon. Thanks to their patented domestication collar, zombies became gardeners, milkmen, servants, and even pets. ZomCon would like everyone to believe that they have the world under control - but do they?
Timmy Robinson doesn't think so. He thinks the world is "phony-baloney". An awkward loner, Timmy spends so much time in his room even his own parents don't notice him. So when Mom buys a zombie to help around the house, Timmy is surprised, and even curious, when the beast wants to play catch - and when the zombie saves him from the local bullies, a true friendship is born and Timmy names the zombie, "Fido".
But Fido's collar goes on the fritz, and the neighbors start paying the ultimate price. To complicate matters, ZomCon's notorious zombie-control specialist, Mr. Bottoms, has moved in across the street.
What begins as a quaint small town, becomes a bizarre "boy and his zombie" story - that ends up teaching one family the price of fear, the rewards of risking love, and the true meaning of what it means to be alive - all from one, almost dead, zombie.
