Take A Look At Handcranked Films.

(Posted In Animation Drama Film News Sci-Fi / Fantasy Trailer Alert USA and Canada )

war.jpgThanks to a reader who sent in a link to Jake Mahaffy's WAR last night I've been spending a good bit of time today digging around in the Handcranked Films website and I have to say that this is some pretty stunning stuff. Handcranked is a collective of film makers in the Boston area making experimental live action and animated films. It looks as though most of those involved spend their days either teaching about film or working on commercial projects, so this is where they stash their dreams. Gorgeously shot and just loaded with fantastic images I'm not at all surprised by the list of festivals these things have played at but I am more than a little stunned that I'd never heard of any of them before now ... take a look. You won't be disappointed.

im not too impressed by most of these.
however, fable looks really great!
and the feature film WAR could possibly be good. im expecting that i will not like it but i would be happy if it turned out to be fairly good.

Wow. There's some pretty haunted footage of rural America there. Those features really need to make it to disc somehow. I just might have to order the tape they have offered with a couple of the shorts since The Minotaur looks fantastic.

I highly recommend their compelation tape. I've attended an
open studio at their loft and am looking forward to seeing
WAR. They were working on a silent film about Robert Godard
which looked interesting.

I've seen Brian Papcaik's "Met State" before and it is really amazing, but I am disappointed that there are only very short clips on the Handcranked website. The full film was on the Sundance website a year ago, but now I can't find it. Anyone know where I could find Met State online?

I imagine your correspondent came across War through my site--I don't think it's had any recent public screenings. I saw War last fall, and it's haunted me ever since, but I only got around to putting up a review about three weeks ago. You can find it here: http://pullquote.typepad.com/pullquote/2006/02/motion_studies.html

The compilation tape contains Minotaur, Lost & Found, Met State, and Egypt Hollow.
Not War or Fable. It took them three months to send it to me but it was worth the wait.

Jake is my nephew and I have seen "War" here in Warren. Anyone wanting a copy should contact him at Handcrank Productions. He is a professor in Rhode Island and received a Guggenheim award. Jake's interest comes from his fraternal grandmother and father. I am very proud of him and glad to see what exposure he is getting
