Is Carnivale Coming Back To HBO?

(Posted In Horror Sci-Fi / Fantasy TV USA and Canada )

carnivale2.jpgYes, I still lament the passing of Carnivale but, appropriately enough, there are rumblings that it may be returning from the dead ... here's the skinny:

"MediaVillage has heard that HBO is seriously considering developing a two hour movie or a four-hour miniseries that would tie up the tantalizing loose ends from the final episode of its supernatural dust-bowl drama Carnivale ... The new production would be telecast sometime in 2007. Further, if that movie or mini does well, MediaVillage has been told the pay cable giant might even consider resurrecting the franchise as an ongoing series in 2008."

Now, as much as I love Deadwood - and that's a whole lot of love, right there - Carnivale, to me, has been the jewel in HBO's crown from the day it hit the air. It is a show that was just really hitting its stride when it was cancelled and if this pans out it will be one very happy day in the Twitch household indeed. Hell ... if they revive Carnivale, keep Deadwood going and throw some money at David Lynch to make these 'return of Special Agent Dale Cooper' rumors a reality and HBO could be entering into their very own golden age ...

Big thanks to Bill for the pointer.

Wasn't this rumour around a long time ago. That HBO had offered the makers a tv movie or mini-series to wrap up the story but were turned down because they believed it would not do the story justice.

The rumor was that HBO wanted to wrap up the whole series in a TV movie or mini-series, to which Daniel Knauf (the creator) refused. However, this rumor states that they would make a movie/mini-series to wrap up the cliffhanger set up at the end of season two. This lets them move the story forward while gauging interest in bring the series back to tell the rest of the story properly. It is basically like making 2 to 4 episodes worth of story that will have a (hopefully temporary) ending.

The last time I heard this rumour was months ago, so I'm very glad to see it undemised.

First of all, I'd like a season 2 DVD box set.

Yeah, it's been over a year since the second season aired. A season 2 DVD set would be much appreciated. Of course, if they're waiting until this rumored TV movie is ready to release the box set, we could be waiting a long time.

holy schnikies...how cool would that be. This was such a glimmer of hope in worthwhile TV watching for me.

The long delay in the DVD release is one of the reasons I think this rumor's got legs, actually. Think about it ... HBO knew before the end of season two that it wouldn't be coming back. From a business standpoint the best move, then, would've been to get the DVD set together quickly and release it to either follow close after the end of the show or to coincide with the official cancellation announcement to ride the buzz in the fan community. i.e. it's the show's last gasp, get it while you still can. HBO are way too savvy in the marketing department to not realize that waiting as long as they have has hurt the potential sales numbers because the show simply isn't in the public mind now the way it was.

So why wait? Probably because the fan outcry was so strong when the cancellation was announced that they started exploring at least possible ways of bringing it back and are planning on using the DVD release to springboard into whatever they do next. From a marketing standpoint it's the only thing that makes sense.

please do something to tie up loose ends... Carnivale is/was so well done and intelligent. What a shame it is to just drop it!
