Brand New Full Length Trailer for Linklater's A Scanner Darkly!

(Posted In Animation Film News Sci-Fi / Fantasy Trailer Alert USA and Canada )

scannerdarklysmall.jpgBig thanks to Jung for pointing me to the brand new trailer for Richard Linklater's A Scanner Darkly. It's big, it's pretty, it shows a whole lot of new stuff and I can't wait to see it on the big screen. On a musical note I'm still a little bummed Radiohead turned down the offer to score the film but the M83 in the trailer is a good choice as well ...

I was down in Austin, Texas last October, at a special presentation by the animation shop working on A Scanner Darkly at FantasticFest. It looked good then... it looks amazing now!

Curiously, I found that this rotoscoping animation technique didn't work for me in Waking Life. In that flick, I saw it as pretentious. But for A Scanner Darkly... it just seems right on. A story that's all about mind-alteration combined with a trippy animation style: match made in heaven. And Philip K Dick. Can't wait!

Keano reeves imho is one of the worst actors hollywood is using.
the only thing they guy is capable of is look sad and say things like "woah!".
no emotion, no extra talent, only fit for a few roles.
Ok the matrix was cool, really cool but that was purely because the script ad style was so good, had nothing to do with anything reeves did.

Now, scanner darkly does look quite interesting, i havent seen Waking life yett so i'm not sure i can stand looking at those effects for more then an hour, but it does look interesting.
I'll be sure to wath the movies when i can

I still don't understand what's the point using this technique. Why not make a regular movie if he has all the actors act it out in front of a camera.
This doesn't even look that good to begin with.

I'm pumped for this one. I don't care about Keanu's acting abilities (or lack thereof), he's got enough screen presence to make me want to watch him. It's the fact that this might be the first faithful Dick adaptation to hit the screens, though, that makes me so excited.

Damn it, he's a druggie/undercover cop who's not sure of who he is, with a fading sense of identity.

That's got Keanu written all over it.

Van Gogh had the actual night sky as inspiration to do "Starry Night." Why didn't he just paint it closer to what it actually looked like? Because it was art. You may not like rotoscope technology, but that doesn't invalidate its existence.

rotoscoping was effective in waking life because it enabled an otherwise surreal film to flow without suspending disbelief, and I believe it will be used to the same effect in a scanner darkly, although in this case perhaps seemlessly blending acting and CG without being distracting.

"You mean the two halves of my brain are... competing?"

Oh, no. No no no. Something has gone horribly wrong. Please, everyone stop using Keanu. Not even for a sopa commercial. Please.

I love the look of rotoscoping and think it has really improved since they did Waking Life. To me this has all the ingredients for a wonderful eye candy of a show.
