Ozon's Next To Be English Language Debut

(Posted In Continental Europe and Russia Drama Film News )

ozon.jpgIn a somewhat surprising move - to me, at least - French auteur Francois Ozon has announced that his next film will be his English language debut. Even more surprising is that he has cast the star of Dirty Dancing 2, which means that not only is Ozon seeing something in UK actress Romola Garai that virtually nobody else has, not to mention that he must have actually gone out and seen Dirty Dancing 2 in the first place. The film, titled Angel, will also star Charlotte Rampling, Lucy Russell, Michael Fassbender and Sam Neill.

Very little is being said plot wise, but photography has already begun in London and Screendaily reports that the story "story, set in 1910, [is] about a woman who climbs the social ladder by becoming a famous novelist."

Thanks to Maria for the pointer.

Wasn't SWIMMING POOL primarily in English?

While I wrote this up, too (thanks), I'm confused - wasn't Swimming Pool primarily in English? I've taken the angle that it's his first film in English with a British setting, and I wonder why Ozon is referring to this as his "English-language debut."

Maybe they're referring to it that way because this will be his first entirely in English ... not sure, but that's the official line and everybody's sticking to it ...

Hey! I saw Dirty Dancing 2.

(Sigh.)

It makes me sad that people only remember Romola Garai for "Dirty Dancing 2."

I fell for Garai when she starred in "I Capture the Castle." I wrote at the time that while the film was flawed, her radiance and intelligence and subtlety immediately announced the arrival of a formidable talent.

My faith in her was backed up when "Vanity Fair" opened, and while Reese Witherspoon was impressive, I thought Garai stole every single scene that she was in. She was more believable than Witherspoon, sexier, and seemed to belong in that world, whereas Witherspoon looked like an American actress pursuing an Oscar nomination.

I am THRILLED that Ozon has recognized an underrated talent, and I look forward to the day that she finally gets the attention she deserves. Ozon may be just the director to do that for her.

In other words, no, Ozon isn't the only one who's noticed.
