Kokkuri. by Takahisa Zeze (1997). R1 USA DVD May 2nd 2006.

(Posted In Asia DVD News Drama Horror )

kokkuri.jpegTakahisa Zeze's odd take on the teen horror boom in Japan of the 90's then, a deceptively familiar idea with a different approach it seems. Anyway, people have been resorting to the old HK VCD of this in order to see it with subtitles, and that disc itself seems out of print. Only semi-familiar with Zeze, the man behind the popular 'Moon Child' and the slightly more obscure Pinku movies 'Raigyo' and 'Tokyo X Erotica', so having a little nose around I found the MidnightEye Interview I've linke to below, which I myself will go off to read in a minute. This R1 USA DVD has been talked about recently within pieces online, and now Al Edwards at DVDManiacs Forum has spotted the date is now firmly set for May 2nd 2006. Yes, I know this is essentially going to be sold and taken as yet another J-Horror, this is one of those rarities though - one of the films seemingly left behind and waiting for a DVD release for some years, something people have had their fingers crossed for.

PokerIndustries has this synopsis, "Mio, Hiroko, and Masami are three high-school girls in Tokyo without true identities, who seem to be living between life and death. Mio still lives with the vague memory of her mother drowning on the beach in front of her. The three girls dabble in the supernatural, and listen to a nightly radio show "Bluebird", whose DJ conjures up the fortune-telling spirit, Kokkuri. When Kokkuri foresees one of the three girl's death before they turn 17, it creates tension between the friends, and sets them down a path that will forever change their lives."
