I should probably declare up front that I've got a healthy personal bias here ... it's been a while since we've had any significant contact but I lived in pretty close quarters with Dan Smith (AKA Brother Danielson) for a summer a while back. That was the summer tha Dan signed his first record contract and I got to sit in on many of the writing and rehearsal sessions for what became Tell Another Joke At The Old Chopping Block. I like the guy a lot, have nothing but respect for his integrity and the way he's stuck to his utterly unique vision, and to answer the question raised in the trailer linked below, yes he is absolutely for real.
So, the son of a Pentecostal hymn writer starts a band with his many siblings, dresses them up in nurses uniforms, and plays solo shows in old folks homes dressed in a tree made of felt and paper mache. It should be a train wreck - and there are definitely many who say it is, Dan's music is definitely not for everyone - but the guy's built up a huge amount of critical respect in the independent music community and has shared producers with Galaxie 500 and The Pixies. And now there's a movie about him that looks every bit as strange and compelling as Dan himself. Indie kids be on the lookout for sometime Famile member Sufjan Stevens in the trailer ...

Thanks for this, I'm actually a fan of the Danielson's work. They are a trip though, that's for sure.
This looks fantastic. If anyone deserves more attention than they're getting, it's Danielson.
Some of the most compelling strange music I've ever experienced. Glad to see that Danielson is still alive and well. Gotta see the movie...
Ah. This brings back precious memories of our festival days.
I too enjoy the Danielson Familie, but none of the recent stuff has matched Fetch The Compass Kids.
Ships is the best thing he's ever done ... I've heard an early mix of it and it's incredible ...
sweet!
