Image Entertainment's 'Tokyo Psycho' Actually Toshiaki Toyoda's 'Porno Star'!

(Posted In Action Asia DVD News Drama )

pornostar.jpegThere you go, license an absolute gem of a movie that people have been typing online about for so long that their fingers now have absolutely no fingerprints on them any more, then give a title that exactly matches another upcoming DVD release (coincidence maybe, but why not just 'Porno Star'?!) from PanikHouse, but which bares no relation to and release it. There was a Fangoria announcement this week which didn't include the artwork so it made no sense either. Yes, it's Toshiaki '9 Souls' Toyoda's 1998 movie 'Porno Star', and it's finally with us on April 18th 2006 on R1 USA DVD. Happy happy happy.

'Porno Star' Midnighteye Review, Varied Celluloid Review, Sarudama Review.

Image Entertainment : 'Tokyo Psycho' aka 'Porno Star'. They've also got Shinya Tsukamoto's 'Gemini' announced, which we all thought was coming from another label, but there you go.

Thanks, I'm sure that the title Tokyo Psycho will create plenty of unnecessary confusion, even though the original title bore no relation to the events in the film. Also, no film lover should pass up on Gemini, Tsukamoto's adaptation of Edogawa Rampo's novel Soseiji (Twins). More theatrical than his preceding works, it is also his first feature shot on 35mm. Those who read French are urged to acquire the elegantly packaged Studio Canal version, which includes Tsukamoto's 2nd film, Hiruko the Gobelin (1990) as well as the hallucinatory early short (46 min.) The Adventures of Denchu Kozu (1987).

I'm sure BestBuy, WalMart and Blockbuster would have refused to carry a DVD with the title "Pornostar" so this name change makes good business sense. GOD BLESS AMERICA!!!

PS: Toyoda has said in interviews that his first draft of the screenplay had a character who was a porn star but later he got written out and now it's supposed to be Earth that is like a Porno Star. Not anymore, though. Glad I already own the German DVD which bravely kept the original title.

Man, that title totally misrepresents the film. Of course, so did the original ... but as long as they do a decent job on the picture and subs I'm just happy there's a legit subtitled release of this coming ...

That comment about the fingerprints dissapearing was spot on!
Really looking forward to that one.
Anyone heard whats up with him and his Kûchû teien, after him being busted and all that?
How the heck could the police know he had the stuff, someone must not have liked him...

Wait...Pornostar doesn't totally misrepresent the film?

Saw this in theatres awhile back and have been looking for a release...glad to see it has finally come.

kuchgu teien was 'hanging garden' released late last year, wasnt it? i think he got away with all the drug stuff somewhat, think todd kept track of all that (should be in the archives).

Probably my favourite Toyoda film... glad to see it get some more attention (whatever the title).

Yeah, Hanging Garden got a limited release and is doing the festival rounds. Toyoda got off with basically a lengthy stint of probation but he's laying low for the forseeable future. No plans for any more films any time soon, which is sad because I really wanted to see the biker gang thing he was working on ...

is there any word on whether or not this release of 'gemini' will include a subbed version of the miike-directed making-of documentary found on the japanese disc?

» Posted by jung at January 29, 2006 03:47 AM

thhe Fangoria mention of 'Gemini' suggests the disc is the same contents as per the japanese one, so i suspect that Miike's making-of could be on there... check out that Fangoria link above...
