Zhang Yimou's Raise the Red Lantern and Ju Dou Hitting R1 DVD February 14th.

raisetheredlantern.jpgGood news for serious art house lovers: Zhang Yimou's Raise the Red Lantern and Ju Dou are both slated to hit North American DVD February 14th. Many people point to Lantern, in particular, as the high point of both director Zhang and star Gong Li's career's and it's continued absence on DVD - or, at least, legal DVD - has led to much wailing and gnashing of teeth for people who care about such things.

Geert Jan, our DVD Calendar maven, actually spotted this a while back when the film came up in our forums but there were questions about the legitimacy of the release that kept us from posting about it, but it all seems to be on the up and up. Here's the official press release from Razor Digital Entertainment:

"STUDIO CITY, CA—January 23, 2006 – Zhang Yimou is one of the best-known directors of the Chinese Fifth Generation and one of the most influential and widely respected filmmakers working today. Virtually unknown to most Americans prior to the recent release of HERO and HOUSE OF FLYING DAGGERS, the release of RAISE THE RED LANTERN and JU DOU represent two of Zhang’s earliest and most acclaimed films; both winners of numerous international awards as well as Academy Award â nominations for Best Foreign Film.

The long awaited DVD release of RAISE THE RED LANTERN, considered one of the landmark films of the 1990’s, stars the beautiful Gong Li as a 20-year-old college student who leaves school to become the fourth wife of a wealthy, powerful aristocrat. Her presence occasions a series of bitter jealousies and disputes with the three other wives. A fascinating work about sex, oppression and patriarchy, RAISE THE RED LANTERN was named Best Foreign Language Film by the New York Film Critics Circle and the National Society of Film Critics and received an Oscar â nominated for Best Foreign Film.

The erotic thriller that China didn't want you to see, JU DOU is an exquisitely photographed and smartly performed drama of secret love and hidden faces. Trouble closely follows passion when a beautiful young bride is drawn to the handsome, strong nephew of her new husband, an ancient and disagreeable owner of an isolated dye factory. With excellent performances by Gong Li, Li Bao-tan, Li Wei and Zhang Li, JU DOU was the first of two straight Oscar â nominations for Zhang Yimou.

RAISE THE RED LANTERN and JU DOU are the two latest releases in the partnership between Razor Digital Entertainment and Magic Play, a wholly owned subsidiary of China’s Hunan TV & Broadcast Intermediary Co., Ltd. “The upcoming release of RAISE THE RED LANTERN and JU DOU have raised the profile of our entire library of Chinese language films to a new level,” stated Mitch Perliss, Executive Vice President, Razor Digital Entertainment. “Retailers and catalogers alike have discovered that we are a one-stop shop for some great, award-winning films from China. The demand for these two titles has already given all these deserving films the exposure they deserve. At a time where we need to understand Chinese culture better than ever, these movies give us a great insight into the history of Chinese life via film.” "

I'm not at all familiar with RDE and the quality of their releases so I have no idea what to expect from this, though I am trying to secure an advance copy to let you all know ...

Thanks to Ryan for the pointer.

I was quite elated when I heard about this late last year. The DVD covers are somewhat mediocre but I'll be very happy if they did a good job with the transfer....we'll wait and see.

Now....I'd give my left arm for an English-subbed release of Red Sorghum. Why has Criterion completely ignored the Zhang Yimou catalog thus far is beyond me!

Happy Happy days...I love the cloistered little universe in Raise the Red Lantern, and will be upgrading my crappy Chinese Boot as soon as I hear how good the x-fer is.

Word on the street is that Razor did not do these films justice. Reviews at Amazon, DVDBeaver and DVDTown all indicate that the transfer could hardly have been worse. Extremely disappointing, as many of us have been waiting for years to see these films again as they were meant to be seen. If only Criterion would release these...

Just rec'd Raise the Red Lantern DVD from Amazon. It's one of the worst DVD transfers ever made. Not only is the print terrible, the subtitles are laughable -- misspellings and typos everywhere; new subtitles were mystifyingly added in place of the original subtitles, and clearly were done by someone whose first language is not English. Magic Play should be ashamed of themselves, showing zero respect for both the film and its American audience. DO NOT BUY THIS DVD; if you love this film, you will only be left disappointed and angry.
