Japanese cult auteur Takashi Miike is at it again. After a brief slowdown around the big budget studio flicks Zebraman and The Great Yokai War, Miike seems to be resuming his standard frenetic pace. He's got a handful of titles announced for the coming year already - seriously, five or six features in a year is not uncommon for the man, so when I saw that he would have a new film at the European Film Market in Berlin I assumed it would be one of those. But it's not. No Ultraman, no Shark Fin Soup nor any of the others we've already heard rumblings of. Here's what he's got:
Big Bang Love, Juvenile A: Starring Ryuhei Matsuda (Gohatto, Blue Spring, 9 Souls, Rampo Jigoku)), Masanobu Ando (Battle Royale) and Ryo Ishibashi (The Grudge), the film revolves around a young man who, while working in a gay bar, is sexually assaulted by a customer, goes into a frenzy and kills the man. He then strikes up a close relationship with another man while in jail.
Matsuda had a minor role - little more than a cameo - in Miike's IZO and I'm more than a little excited to see him in a lead for the man. And Matsuda paired up with Ando with material like this? Very, very sweet.
Thanks to Brian for the pointer.
first ive heard of these... seems like theres no major reveal moment for "another new miike project" any more, no word spreading, no fanfare... shame, still a damn fine film maker, and this reveal made my day already, and it isnt even 9am.
Certainly sounds more interesting than the last couple movies he's churned out. That I love Ryuhei Matsuda also helps.
"Big Bang Love, Juvenile A" = 46-okunen no koi.
