Lawrence Bender and Karen Barber have signed a two-pic deal with Nickelodeon Movies to bring Jeff Stone's adventure book series "The Five Ancestors" to the silver screen.
Bender is better known for his edgier work with Tarantino. Nickelodeon Senior VP Julia Pistor said this about Bender, "This important alliance with Lawrence re-emphasizes Nick Movies' commitment to deliver groundbreaking, edgy fare into the family marketplace and we are extremely pleased about this collaboration". I'm sure parents will appreciate this 'edgy fare' for their children's viewing pleasure and then wonder why on earth their son and daughter would be so eager to kick them in the groin after watching such a film. The books are widely known to contain a fair amount of violence and are targetted towards a young adult audience. It sounds a far cry from Jimmy Neutron.
Here's the storyline of Stone's book series. Set in 17th-century China, the series follows the adventures of five young monks, each of whom specializes in a different style of "Animal" kung fu. After a rebel brother monk leads an attack on their secret temple, the monks are forced to flee and must rely on their training and instincts to survive. The storyline is strangely reminisant of the real history of the Shaolin temple. Shaolin Kung Fu was outlawed and the temple was destroyed in the 1760s by the manchus and only five monks survived.
The other film in this two-film package is a CGI movie about a cow on a quest to India where cows are free and sacred. Aptly titled Holy Cow.
