Complete, Uncut, English Subtitled, ALL REGION Sha Po Lang DVD Available For Pre-Order Now!

(Posted In Action Asia DVD News Martial Arts )

Sha_Po_Lang_TIFF.jpgRegular readers already know how much we here at Twitch love Sha Po Lang. But for the irregulars, here's a recap:

1. I am on record saying that it is the best Hong Kong action film of the past decade, Infernal Affairs included, and I am perfectly happy to stand by that claim.
2. The reaction of the entire row of Twitch folk on seeing this film projected at the Toronto Film Festival - once we'd scraped our jaws off the floor - was the unanimous opinion that seeing this film was equal to our first viewings of John Woo's The Killer.
3. We've reviewed it FOUR TIMES. And all four reviews are absolutely glowing. And here they are: mine, Mack's, Kurt's, and Peter's.

This film goes well beyond 'recommended' territory into absolutely essential. Yes, we like it a bit.

Keeners jumped all over the mainland Chinese DVD release of the film that came out last month, but that version does not include English subtitles and has been radically altered. The good stuff, the real stuff, is coming on the Hong Kong DVD, due on January 11th. This is the full, uncut version of the film - something we'll likely never see here in the west considering the Weinstein's bought rights and are showing no signs of changing their scissor happy ways. It's a two disc set including English subtitles, DTS sound and, best of all, it is coded for all regions so it can be viewed by anyone, anywhere in the world, whether you've got region free equipment or not. Plus it's cheap.

Pre-Order Sha Po Lang now or risk my wrath.

u had me until you said better than the Killer. Woo is tremendously over-rated; I avoided HK cinema for years because of Woo. His Hollywood output is even worse. Tsui Hark on the other hand is tremendously under-rated and anything he touches is worth at least one viewing.

That said, I think this flick is gonna be good. Woo comparisons notwithstanding.

How 'bout some credit for giving you the news fellas?

» Posted by Tory at January 4, 2006 05:05 PM

You were one of six, I think. Plus I've been checking YesAsia for it daily ever since the January release date was announced. It was posted before I even saw your email ...

» Posted by Todd at January 4, 2006 05:11 PM

You're a liar, Todd, a liar. Now, I want my credit! No seriously, I was joking, but sorry.

Ahhhh! What about the pretties? [translation: extras..what are they]

Nevertheless, it's about time.

Extras are:
- Theatrical Trailer
- Making of feature
- TV spot
- Press Conference
- Picture Gallery (not sure about if I translated that one right)

I just recieved the Uncut mainland DVD and it actually is uncut (real ending and all). Great transfer and awesome DTS sound, too! I'll definitely be getting the HK 2 discer though.

Uh, Todd, INFERNAL AFFAIRS was *not* an action film. it was a cop thriller with slight bursts of action.

So that means there hasn't been a good Hong Kong action film for the last ten years until SPL came along.

» Posted by Adam at January 4, 2006 09:51 PM

crazybee: Good to hear. It was a pleasant surprise for me too to say the least.

» Posted by Chelle at January 4, 2006 10:02 PM

Adam: I make the comparison to Infernal Affairs because they're both cop thrillers. SPL is an odd beast, equal parts heroic bloodshed (hence the Woo comparison), cop thriller (hence Infernal Affairs) and martial arts pic.

And there have been other good HK action flicks in the past ten years, SPL is just the best of them. Pretty easily, in my opinion.

Bee: is there more than one mainland edition? I know the first one that came out was dramatically cut and featured the original ending only as a special feature ... given the mainland's rules about portrayals of crime and criminals I'm surprised they got an uncut release there in any format ...

» Posted by Todd at January 4, 2006 10:07 PM

There are two Mainland DVDs - the regular cut (which is the one with removed violence and the real ending gone), and the "uncut edition" which reinstates everythng that was removed. I got the latter, and yeah, I was quite surprised that it made it through the censors as well.

After all the ravings on this site, the inevitable crappy North American release and my procrastination in getting a region-free player, I just might have to make this my first foreign DVD purchase.

FINALLY. After sitting in the Ryerson theatre and watching this thing with the Twitch crew, I have been anxious to get this thing home and watch it repeatedly. It's ordered, Todd. You can put down that axe. I have avoided your wrath for another day. Thanks for the tip off!

Too there isn't any deleted scene on the DVD. I wanted to see more fight scenes that got cut like the one with the picture of Donnie taking on three of Sammo henchman.

Can someone please explain something to me - if the DVDs available at YesAsia and Cd-Wow are uncut, why are they only 93/94 minutes long (NTSC) when IMDB.com states that the version of the film shown at the Toronto International Film Festival was 97 minutes long?

» Posted by RSI at January 8, 2006 12:40 AM

Just about all the non-Hollywood info on the IMDB is fan-submitted so there are often mistakes there, which is one possible source of confusion. This is definitely the full version that played in Hong Kong and I'm not aware of any cuts made between TIFF and the HK release ... it was so well received at TIFF that there was certainly no reason to cut anything. Anyway ... I caught it at TIFF and have the DVD coming so if I spot any obvious differences I'll be sure to post about them.

Good news is that Deltamac is starting to do releases with English subbed extras ... hopefully that'll be the case here as well ...

» Posted by Todd at January 8, 2006 12:35 PM

Thanks Todd. I've ordered a copy from Cd-Wow and am really looking forward to seeing it.

This is an AWESOME movie! I just saw it and WOW, its unbelievable.

The story, the action, the cinematography, the characters, the soundtrack. Its awesome!

For anyone who thinks TYG is better than this movie. You are wrong. I watched TYG and TYG can not compare to the Greatness of this movie. TYG might have more martial art fight scenes but SPL delivers in so many ways.

This is a must have movie. One of the best flicks ever!

» Posted by Kenny at January 11, 2006 07:24 PM

That's right, this movie delivers in so many ways, I wish there was more fighting, but I guess the whole movie was almost perfectly balanced. Unfortunaly, when I saw the movie the "Triplekick" by Donnie is missing. I was very dissapointed. Supposely the dvd was uncut (2 Disc, All Reg, NTSC, 93 mins long, Deltamac. Category III)
PLEASE! Where can I find the Version with the Triplekick? I hope its not a bootleg. THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP!
