I've learned the hard way that there is a basic generational gap involved with Star Wars fans. There is the current crop for whom the prequel trilogy was their first exposure, and then there are the rest of us.
While I'm not quite old enough to have seen A New Hope on its first run it is no exaggeration at all to say that Star Wars populated the landscape of my imagination like nothing else at least until I hit puberty. The Star Wars universe is where I lived out my childhood. I caught both Empire and Jedi on opening night and - thanks to living close enough to the US border that I could catch both Canadian and US broadcast TV - had seen A New Hope well into double digits before it was even available on videotape. Two days ago my sister and I were sitting with my brother in law - an enormous Star Wars nut himself - rattling off the massive list of Star Wars toys that we literally played into their graves. There was just something about those original experiences that was truly life changing, something about the fact that somebody, somewhere had literally physically created this actual universe that was inspiring in a way that the idea of a bunch of pasty white guys spending all day sitting staring at their computer screens never can be. And, yes, I'm aware of the irony inherent in that statement.
The current crop of Star Wars fans can't seem to understand why us older lot are so bothered by the over-digitization of our childhood dream-world. But Patrick Read Johnson does. And how. 5-25-77 is his loosely autobiographical film about the impact of Star Wars on his own life as a teenage geek in love with the movies. We linked to an early, very rough teaser a while back but we have just been sent the full length trailer and if the film comes anywhere close to living up to this Johnson has made one of the most loving odes to geekdom ever. It is simply fantastic.
Now, when I say that this is the full trailer it is worth pointing out that while this is full length and fully polished, it is also not complete. It is not supposed to be available to public eyes just yet - there are some uncleared pieces of music involved, apparently - and came to us by convoluted means - think the watch scene in Pulp Fiction - but I just couldn't sit on it. Considering that it's unfinished there's a fighting chance that it'll be taken down soon, so act fast.

All the traffic seems to have killed that server. Luckily, some kind soul has mirrored the trailer at MegaUpload. You can now find it here.
star wars sucks
Well...if you use the most played out trailer song in a trailer then it's gotta be good!
Blinkey, I'll agree that probably HALF of the running time of now six Star Wars films that exist 'suck'. I'm thinking most of Episodes I (Phantom), II (Clones) and about a third of Episodes III (Revenge) and a third or so of Episode VI (Return of the Jedi).
BUT having said that, I'm also in agreement with Todd here. If you were a kid growing up in the late 1970s and early 1980's, then the very original Star Wars (1977) and Empire Strikes Back (1980) and all the toys and excitement that accompanied these grounbreaking films were absolutely enthralling!
The original Star Wars films shaped many of our childhood memories, and got us in love with fantasy and Sci-Fi cinema like no other films before or since. To this day, John Williams' Oscar-winning score for Star Wars never fails to make the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end.
A final bit of trivia. Although I never considered my self a total Star Wars nut, when it came to shooting a spoof romantic comedy for my wedding five years ago in Toronto, I just felt it had to be one based on Star Wars. Feel free to check out "The Jedi Who Loved Me" and download the trailer and full-length short here:

We've played Jedi at numerous film festivals around the world since our wedding to an overwhelmingly positive response. So positive, It's actually got me into filmmaking, and screenwriting on a more serious level. I'm working on my first feature script now. And it's all thanks to Star Wars. Go figure.
This will be a great movie !!!
I love it. Thank you for that.
Wonderful trailer and I can't wait to see it. Looks almost like a sequel to Freaks and Geeks because of John Frances Daley.
But why is this trailer 54 megs?
blinkey sucks.
this movie looks COOL!
this movie is gonna blow fat chunks
I'm pretty excited about this movie. A lot more than before after watching this trailer. I've always been fascinated about how it was when Star Wars first came out. And now I think that this movie will give me some idea of how it was like. Especially from the point of view of someone I can relate to. (Sci-Fi nerd who likes making movies)
I have talked to Mr.Johnson a few times too many over at the aintitcoolnews.com chat room some years ago when he used to be a usual over there. And i got to say this, the man is one of the most passionate young directors and i believe that his STAR WARS road movie will be one of the highlights of the year. Hope we get to see it on a wide release!:)
Thanks for this you guys!
This looks brillant and wonderfully done. Rock on guys I will be looking to watch the one!!!
I am really looking forward to this. I lived through this era as well...in fact, the original Star Wars was the first film I ever saw in a theater. I had all the toys, bedsheets, lunch boxes, etc.
And guess what? I also love the PT films, and find them to be made in the same spirit as the originals.
So I hope some don't use what looks like a great little movie to conitnue to bash Lucas' latest SW efforts.
WHAT HAPPEND TO THE TRAILER?!?! Can anyone tell me where I can find it now? Please!
Looks like we killed their bandwidth ... 30K downloads of a 50 meg file over two days will do that ...
i liked the first three star wars movies when i was a kid too, but the new trilogy just completely destroyed anything to do with star wars for me.
someone had to have downloaded it for mirroring.
Nope, that's the old one. The new one is much longer and much better.
I like the trailer. Should be great. But where does Todd get the idea that this film is somehow for those who "are so bothered by the over-digitization of our childhood dream-world."--i.e. the prequels?
The movie only loosely even appears to be about Star Wars...and to the extent it is about Star Wars, it seems to be about how Star Wars changed everything for this young, budding filmmaker.
Now, not even the most ardent PT-defender would claim that the PT has changed everything or even remotely had the same impact on our culture that the OT did...so how, again, is this film propping up the old Star Wars films at the expense of the new ones?
I don't think it's propping up anything or knocking anything, I just think it'll strike an emotional chord with children of the 70s and early eighties that will be almost entirely absent for the current generation.
HEYY i was wondering why this guy is watching starwars??
so gay
godd u should make a movie then this piece of shit
like the next star wars movie geez
sex toys best sex toys on the net.
How come I can't get the trailer? I heard so much about, I really want to see it.
I have been curious about this movie for a long time. I really hope it comes out this year. It seems to capture the essence of what it was like growing up during that time... the pure joy of growing up on the Spielberg/Lucas movies.
"The Enterprise has deflector shields!!"
Awesome.
Hmmm...that's certainly a movie I will make a point of seeing, whenever it's coming, out, that is. It looks pretty good.
I remember seeing the trailer for the original SW film at a science fiction convention in 1976, then asking for the novel at the local bookstore. The manager had no idea what I was talking about, until the clerk remembered that they had gotten 5 sample copies in the latest box from the distributor. I bought one, and two months later the other 4 were on the "1/2 price" rack because nobody gave them a second look. I bought them to give to friends. A week after that, the movie came out, and within days there wasn't a copy of the book in any store in the country. Star Wars changed a lot of things for a lot of people.
I just hate the fact that people judge entire Star Wars with their own taste. If you don't like it, Star Wars doesn't suck... but YOU do!
There is no bigger movie in the world than Star Wars. If in a 100 years Hollywood no longer exist, and people only remember ONE movie... they will remember STAR WARS
Star Wars is a great saga. All of it. I loved the new pre-trilogy. I love the original Trilogy and I will love the continuation of Star Wars on TV.
well can someone please get the trailer online at popular sites like yahoo movies or apple movies ??
also judging from the story , it think this will be a huge success if made properly, I am one of the star wars geeks, and i LOVE every star wars film, 1 till 6
the entire saga deserves to be the best sci fi film of all time.
I saw Star Wars on 5/25/1977 at the Mann's Chinese in Hollywood. I loved the first trilogy and had my heart broken by the Prequels. What got me back into SW was Clone Wars, Genndy Tartakovsky's series of shorts for Cartoon Network. It made me remember just how fun it all was. I saw Episode III on DVD after seeing both series of Clone Wars, and if you fast-forward through the Anakin/Padme garbage it isn't bad. They could have made one good Prequel if they had just made Episode III with flashbacks of the important stuff from Episode I & II.
Oh yeah, the fanboys were pissing and moaning about the possibility of Leonardo diCaprio as Anakin. Well guess what: Leo would have kicked ass as Anakin. Think back to "The Aviator" and "Catch Me If You Can" and "The Basketball Diaries" and "What's Eating Gilbert Grape." The dude can *act*. Unlike Little Wooden Boy who they got for II and III. Maybe if the hated Leo was given the role he would have slam dunked it. The problem was that everyone remembers him from Titanic. Titanic was a hateful movie, true, but actually diCaprio did well with what he was given.
Oh yeah...someone should have been on the case to fix the dialogue in all three Prequels. Lawrence Kasdan, where were you? [sigh]
Lawrence Kasdan was asked by Lucas to write the Prequel Trilogy, but he declined. He told Lucas to write the thing himself.
