친절한 금자씨 (Sympathy For Lady Vengeance) DVD - Open Case

(Posted In Asia Cult DVD News Drama )

unkinddvd.jpgWe've waited way too long for this... she was supposed to be 'kind', but lots of people on Korean message board are starting to call this release '불친절한 금자씨 (UNkind Geum-Ja)'. First it was supposed to be December 20, then 27, and on top of that the first pressing quickly vanished after a few weeks of pre-order (second should be out by December 31/January 2). But those of you who were fast in pre-ordering Park Chan-Wook's final trip into what vengeance does to people, are probably waiting for the DVD as we speak.

Anyway, open case shots of the DVD are now circulating all over the Korean speaking net, so I could have picked from literally dozens. But I'll go with the always reliable DVD Prime, which posted simple, good looking screenshots of the entire package. Shows the slipcase, keepcase, the DVDs, the booklet... everything you might need.

All I have to say is... it was worth the wait. This thing is stunningly beautiful, one of the most stylish looking DVD sets of the year. And, if all goes according to plans (right, mailman?), you'll get a full review next week. If you still haven't, go get this beauty over here.

Looks great. But i'll wait for a complete Trilogy-Box and i damn hope that the box will be released very soon. Hope there won't be any problems to release it'cause if i'm correct SFMV has a different distributer. Fingers crossed...

Same as Freewell. That trilogy boxset will be the centerpiece of my DVD collection... but this, it sure is tempting.

I may get a trilogy box set as well, but i have the other two, Oldboy Tartan UK and SFMV Tartan US already.

yep, mine shipped out in the last few days - must have been lucky. oh, and 'welcome to dongmakgol' arrived today - though i only ordered the standard edition (only interested in the film) the special edition has been delayed until early january as theyre removing the soundtrack cd from it...!

Worth noting that the HK release of SFLV apparently has some major problems with the audio tracks ... the Korean edition is definitely the way to go ...

» Posted by Todd Brown at December 29, 2005 01:58 PM

yep, the DTS track drops out i think... HK still a minefield for decent DVDs (thank god some still get it right - panoramas 'election' is a lovely disc) but Korea seems to get it right all the time...

few things:

1) No problem with rights for the Trilogy (as I wrote a couple months ago, I think?). It's under production, and should be up around February. I have absolutely no idea what they're doing, but since the Lady Vengeance DVD is seemingly lacking in extra features (compared to other big Korean releases, that is), I guess there'll be more extras there. Possibly some extras from the Oldboy UE (I imagine Park's brilliant short film and Music Video will be there), and something more.

2) The fade to b&w version of Lady Vengeance has only a DTS track and commentary, so if you don't have a DTS decoder-friendly player or a surround system, you'll hear nothing. I know it's wrong (illegal too? Don't know) to use a Dts track without at least DD2.0, but it's not the first time on Korean DVDs, and I personally couldn't care less.

3) the OST issue with the dongmakgol limited was all Hisaishi's people's doing, KD Media has no faults. They apologized all over the net, and lowered the price from 33k retail to... I forgot, 29 something.

oh... I changed the link. This shows many more screenshots, much better shot and with more detail.

Only DTS and commentary tracks? That's terrible, I was looking forward to watching the fade to b/w version as well as the original :(

You can always use the PC.

BTW, this was at Park's request. It's no mistake, he wanted Dts only from the beginning and they went ahead with it.

Anyway, after a week of bad news, here's some good ones: Duelist, Wedding Campaign and more Taeheung films out in mid January. Yum! ^_^

Talking about PCs -- are you saying it'll work on a dvd-rom even without a dts encoder?

» Posted by Tuan Jim at December 30, 2005 12:49 PM

If you have the higher-end software like the latest PowerDVD deluxe, then apparently there shouldn't be a problem. Many of the basic player software that comes prepackaged w/ PCs though, might not be able to play DTS.

You don't even need powerdvd (well, you DO need a video decoder for the dvd..), the free ffdshow should suffice - when properly configured, of course.

» Posted by Fabool at December 30, 2005 02:27 PM

yeah, just a Dts codec.

Hi friends! I follow the excellent link posted in the "excellent too) review of X and among the good pics I see a nice "bandana" (such as a cloth strip like kamikaze) I suppose packed with the DVD. How can I get it?! Is it packed with DVD? And, which DVD version is it this one reviewed?! Thanx a lot for the time...
