Rewind to the 90s in the UK, and it was perhaps the BBC that were having the biggest hits in comedy, arguably Channel 4 relied upon American imports too often (Roseanne, Friends, Frasier etc), but the BBC had the largest comedy of the 90s in the form of 'Men Behaving Badly'. For those that don't know, the 'new man' backlash came in the form of a very lads (and later, ladettes) culture of the 90's which we're still suffering the hangover from today - both in our general lifestyle, and in the lesser things such as comedy with shows like 'Three Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps', 'Coupling' as the two major examples of something which began a little over a decade ago with shows like 'Red Dwarf' (less obviously) and then 'Game On' and maybe 'Bottom' too.
Anyway, lots of the figures that have appeared in 'Men Behaving Badly' have established themselves and gone onto great comedy/drama hybrids, perhaps more so than any other sitcom of the period it has spawned major stars (Caroline Quentin went onto 'Jonathan Creek' (see Amazon.co.uk) with Q.I's Alan Davies, Neil Morrissey made some stuff over at ITV). One man from this stable initially didn't seem to take to life outside, until the hit 'William and Mary' (another comedy/drama show) and now the hugely popular 'Doc Martin' - which sees Clunes as a top Doctor having to relocate to a coastal practice and start a new life, cueing the clash between uptight professional and laid-back country folk. Great show, but odd that American rights have been sold, and Clunes seems set to reprise the role in a version that would see him travelling to relocate to American shores instead. So, following Hugh Laurie's success as 'House M.D', you might well fall for the charms of Mr.Clunes too. Doesn't happen often, but I am glad - he is a top comedy actor to say the least.
Martin Clunes in 'Doc Martin' (Series 1 at Amazon.co.uk), 'William and Mary' (Series 1-3 at Amazon.co.uk), and 'Men Behaving Badly' (Series 1-6 at Amazon.co.uk.
I was living in Canada in 95, just as MEN BEHAVING BADLY had reached full swing in the UK, and just about the same time it was remade in the US - I never saw the US version, but I gather it was not too popular. Anyway, around this time Martin Clunes had his first stab at North American crossover success with a film he directed called STAGGERED, which I saw in a cinema in Montreal. It was fairly amiable but woolly stuff, and am not sure how well it was received in general, but it seemed to come and go fairly quickly.
I remember being quite a big fan of MBB in my university years, though towards the end of the 90s in its final season I thought the humour had dated really badly (like RED DWARF in fact). "Lad-ism" was no longer a point of rebellion as it had been in the John Major years, but a fact of life, and comedy had moved on with things like the FAST SHOW and Steve Coogan's various escapades (Alan Partridge et al)
Does anyone else remember when MBB first began, before transferring to BBC, when it played on ITV, and Martin Clunes was playing against Harry Enfield, rather than (the incredibly annoying) Neil Morrissey? It must have been about 1991, I think.
Doc Martin is a very good series in my opinion, a show which I have in my sky + planner
I have only recently discoverd Martin Clunes when CBC ran the first series of William and Mary. I searched the web and found 2 more seasons.... I was thrilled! I ordered them not realizing that they would not play on Canadian DVD players. I was so distraut.... until one day I tried a small portabke player and it worked. I have watched that series 4 times and now am watching Doc Martin. I just adore Martin Clumes and am trying to find DVD's of MBB, as I haven't seen it. I know I'll love it if it contains Martin Clunes...wish me luck!!!!
ps.... I do so wish they would have a William and Mary reunion series or movie.

We live in Alberta, Canada and have greatly enjoyed the Doc Martin show, which has been airing Wednesday evenings at 11pm for us. Much to our surprise and disappointment the new program Distant Shores with Peter Davison was premiering in Doc Martin's usual time slot. Does anyone know if there will be a second season of Doc Martin available to Canadian satellite viewers? We are desperate to view any further issues, having enjoyed Martin Clunes in many comedy series since the start of his career. Caroline Catz of Murder in Suburbia is also great in this show...Anyway, here's hoping! Thanks for any future insight!
We are three shows in, first season, here in Melbourne Australia. I love it. Appeals to my sense of humour.
When I eventually get to visit the UK Cornwall is definitely on the agenda.
It airs here at 7.30 Saturday night, followed by The Bill, then Parkinson, then Between The Sheets, great night in.
Hi all....... me again. Does anyone know if there is a third series to the Doc Martin series? I 'really' hope so! I enjoy Distant Shores, but would soooooo much love to see more of Martin Clunes. I'll keep watching. And we would love to see him in some American or even Canadian productions.
