There's no changing old habits, it seems. Grady over at Kaiju Shakedown has gotten definitive word that the Weinstein Company has cut the running time of Chen Kaige's The Promise, altering both the beginning and ending and adding an Anthony Minghella-written opening to try and contextualize the picture for western audiences. Now, to be fair, it is worth pointing out that the early Asian reviews for the film indicated that it could well use another trip to the editing room and that director Chen Kaige - who had final cut written into his contract - oversaw the re-edit himself. Is it a good thing? Is it a bad thing? No way to know at this point, but it seems a fair bet that the western release will be a substantially different film than the one currently breaking box office records throughout Asia and I, for one, will be importing the Asian release to judge the two versions for myself.
Thanks to Maria for the pointer.
Darcy said somewhere that worse than censorship has been the 1-1/2 hr. maximum imposed by the studios. Now that the Weinsteins have rewritten, butchered, and saddled Kaige's epic with a ridiculous title, why don't they just go ahead and have the picture dubbed?
They just can't imagine a movie being accepted by western audience as it is, can they? jon is right ... they should just dub it with some awful voices from the old kung fu flicks.
Great career choices, Mr. Chen. From Yellow Heart to a cut, screwed-up Wenstein toy...
I'll boycott EVERY movie these "cinema lover$" (caugh, caugh) will produce and/or distribute.
Buy imported DVDs instead!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Shame on all the directors who continue to work with these $$$$$ whorshipers!
Like Minghella has ever managed to improve someone else's writing. *still bitter about The Talented Mr Ripley*
Well, in all fairness, I suspect the reason they can't imagine Western audiences will like the movie is because it's horrible. That said, it'll take a hell of a lot more than a few trims and a new opening to salvage this one.
I found myself in a complete boredom watching this supposedly artistic movie.I should not put so much expectation in the first place.
