ame_machi_web.jpgThe official website for Makoto Tanaka's Ame no machi is now online, although at present it's just a home page. (Thanks to regular Twitch reader Samurai Tousaku for bringing this to my attention.)

The screenplay for Ame no machi was written by Tanaka, based on the eponymous short story by Hideyuki Kikuchi. The movie's cast includes Toshihiro Wada, Yôko Maki, Riko Narumi, Tsutomu Takeshige, Mitsuki Nagashima, Chihiro Maebashi, Tôru Shinagawa, Ken Mitsuishi, Ken Yasuda, Noriko Eguchi, Shungiku Uchida, Asami Katsura, Hideyuki Kikuchi (see above), Naruyoshi Kikuchi (he also composed/performed the closing theme song for the movie), Kôichi Ueda, Moeko Ezawa, Kôjirô Kusanagi, Masayasu Kitayama, and Ryôta Tsuchiya.

Progressive Pictures K.K. (Puroguresshibu Pikuchâzu K.K.) is tentatively scheduled to release Ame no machi theatrically in Japan in March of next year.

I've read about this movie on Kikuchi's website back when they were filming it and he visited the set. I say it's about fricken time they made one of his stories as a live action movie in Japan. (Let's forget about that crappy live-action WICKED CITY flick from Hong Kong.) Not that I have any problem with the anime adaptations of his books. I fact, I want more of those as well!

So what's it about?

The film takes places in the town with the highest percentage of rainfall in Japan. There, 35 years ago several elementary schoolchildren spirited away but they return on rainy days. Nevertheless, for some reason they shouldn't be allowed to get inside the house.
