This is a film I eagerly look forward to seeing! Thanks for providing the trailers! Presently I am reading Russell Spurr's memorable account of the Imperial flagship's final mission of April '45. Imperial Japan produced three superbattleships, each a 1000' long and 70,000 tons! The Yamato's sister ships, Musashi and Shinano, should be remembered with her: Musashi saw the most combat of the three leviathans, perishing in the Sibuyan Sea during the Battle of Leyte Gulf in October '44. She perished much as her sister did, pounded under by a furious swarm of hundreds of American warbirds. Shinano--converted from a battleship after Japan's devastating loss at Midway in June'42--was sunk by the U.S.S. Archerfish before the vast aircraft carrier ever had the chance to launch her horde of warplanes in combat.
Earlier this year I visited the U.S.S. Alabama, a South Dakota-class battleship which fought in the Pacific War. The venerable old warship had been damaged by Hurricane Katrina, and was finally re-opening to the public. One of the vessel's WWII veterans told us all to look on the ship's great size and think not of her power, but of our nation's determination to attain victory and peace.
