When word came out that the next Studio Ghibli feature would be a Miyazaki film fans responded with a hearty "Hurray! He's not retiring!" And then it turned out that it would be a film directed by Goro Miyazaki, the son of the famed Hayao, a man whose previous experience mostly involved topiary gardening and the operations of the Ghibli Museum. And then word came out that daddy wasn't real happy with Goro following in his footsteps. Well, Goro has now publicly responded to his father's displeasure by largely refusing to respond to it and asking that people simply judge him by his work, which is a good response, really. I mean, the guy's already cursed to be compared with one of the most famous animaters in the world simply thanks to his name, no point in making it worse by getting in a public scrap with dad ...
You can find a full translation of Goro's response over at Kaiju Shakedown.
even if he's only got a tenth of his father's talent, this is gotta be better than the shit vesion that played on Sci-Fi channel
I avoided the shit version and am moving on to the books (which I've not read yet but do own now).
The poster is certainly very pretty.
it IS a nice poster. I'm curious about what "shit version" of what you're talking about though :P
Looks nice, but reminds me a little too much of a scene in Nausicaa. I can put in the caption of:
"Ohmu please calm your rage"
I would think that Hayao is mad because his son's work are probably copies of his own ideas and themes. He might want his son Goro to explore his own ideas rather than copy. Still when it comes to the US I will see it.
"I would think that Hayao is mad because his son's work are probably copies of his own ideas and themes"
Everyone can fail. Even Hayao himself. Admittedly, poor Goro has a lot to live up to, standing in the shadow of the legendary animator that managed to penetrate the mainstream american theatre twice, won numberous awards, and broke local box office records of "titanic" proportions. Should we expect such a legendary blow from Goro, or such we expect him to go down in flames? Neither, Goro is NOT Hayao. Goro will most likely bring something fresh to the Ghibli formula not may not work for all Ghibli fans. Then again, Goro may just live up to Ghibli proportion, and Ghibli fans will know that Goro will be there to continue the tradition of excellence upon which Hayao built Ghibli with. Seeing as I'll be in Japan in July, I'm not going to miss my chance. Give Goro a chance, and don't expect it too much of the same ol' thing.
Goro is his own person, and will have his own art style. if someons named Akira Toshimoto for example (random name) drew that picture it never would have been even compared to Nausicaa. so i'll give it a chance, and view it as it's own thing, not comparing it tayo... i think you all should do that too...
The biggest mistake we are making when we watch any film is to start comparing one with another. We should enjoy the flick for what it is and stop worrying about what it could have been. Living up to a standard is hard for anyone. Let your opinions form after you see the movie. Experience it fully and enjoy your popcorn and cold drink, and then decide if it sucks or not. Love or Hate I am glad there is another studio ghibli film.
Always a great fan, thanks for making my childhood a memorable one. It's crazy to see my nephews loving your flick, like Naoshika and Laputa. Decorating their childhood the same way it did mine.
Keep Creating great film and keep the legacy of great film making alive.... fo Shizzle.
