Gedo War History. by Goro Miyazaki. Next Studio Ghibli Film Due July 2006.

(Posted In Action Animation Asia Drama Random Geek Talk Sci-Fi / Fantasy )

gedowarhistory.jpegIt's now clear what the next Ghibli film is, an adaptation of Ursula K Le Guin's 'A Wizard of Earthsea', and who will be Directing it - Hayao Miyazaki's son Goro. Surprisingly due next Summer, July 2006, this is one of a couple of rumoured projects that would become a feature : here's the original post here at Twitch from September 2005 about this Le Guin rumour, as it was then. Anyway, the Studio Ghibli site has today gone through a transformation, and shows a nice picture for the film (small version, left) to get you excited even more. [Source : Nausicaa.net].

UPDATE : Anime News Network is reporting the title as 'Gedo Senki - Tales of Earthsea' ('Record of the Gedo War - Tales from Earthsea'), it may also be referred to as 'Gedo Senki' in abbreviation. Nausicaa.net translates to the title I've used (at least initially) 'Gedo War History'. In the Ghibli site update, there's a production diary for the film amongst all the new content.

But will it be better than the Sci-Fi Channel mini-series from 2004?

A better question would be....is he even half as talented and imaginative and his father?! We'll find out next Summer.

I'd imagine Miyazaki Senior will be keeping a pretty close control over whatever his son does - and don't forget, he'll be using the same staff in Ghibli's studios at Koganei that have worked on all the previous films. Should be interesting, anyway.

I've heard Hayao's pretty opposed to his son doing this, which would make for an interesting situation. But, yeah ... like Jasper said I'm sure he'll have LOTS of experienced people working with him on this. Which is a good thing since I believe he was originally a topiary gardener before running the Ghibli Museum.

Studio Ghibli is my greatest inspiration. I believe that with Goro being a the helm the standard set by previous Ghibli creations will not be jeapordized.

I have been aware of this movie coming out for quite some time, but is this release in Japan, or the American release of the English dub? It is now 2007, and I have seen no advertisements for this movie. Is it coming out soon? And if there is a studio ghibli website in English, could you direct me to it?

A few years ago, the Sci-Fi Network made a (horrible) live-action miniseries from this (wonderful) book series. They still control the movie/TV rights in the USA. It will be a few more years before their Earthsea rights expire and Gedo Senki can be released in the USA.
